I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Princeton University (Princeton, NJ) in Feb 2011
Interview
This differs wildly by department, many of which don't even have interviews. In some departments, it's "visit day" and you are already accepted. In some departments, it's kind of cut-throat. It even differs by advisor, some consider it a real "interview" and some consider it a last-ditch screening attempt to make sure you're not an axe murderer who will terrorize the department for the next 5? years. I am posting this to get the glassdoor upgrade. It is stupid that they require this.

Interview
Very much discussion oriented, no excessively pointed or aggressive questions. Good back and forth with the interviewer. They do a good job of making the whole interview day pretty painless.

Interview
There wasn't really an interview process. They just look at your application, which does need to be very competitive. GRE scores, recommendation letters, GPA, and writing sample. Typical application. The recommendation letters and writing sample are probably the most important aspects of the whole process.
