      Business Intelligence Engineer Interview

      Jun 20, 2018
      Anonymous employee
      Seattle, WA
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at RealSelf (Seattle, WA) in Jun 2018

      Interview

I was contacted by a recruiter after applying online. The process was a phone screen, discussing what I was looking for and giving me some background about the company, its mission, and some of the cool perks. After that, I got a take home technical screen; python and sql problems that took about 4 hours to complete. The exercises were not incredibly hard but solid enough to make you think about it. At no point did i have to do the dreaded whiteboard interview, which was great. I felt like I got to put my best effort forward on the tech screen. After I submitted my screen, I had a one hour conversation with the hiring manager. The conversation was personal and I felt like they made a real effort to get to know me, and understand what I found important. They Invited me to participate in an onsite loop at the office in pioneer square. They just moved to another floor in their building, so some of the cramped space comments looked to be alleviated. The office is very modern but also kinda cozy, with lots of communal space and it wasn't particularly loud. The loop had me meet with four people from different departments and the hiring manager. Each one was a little different, and I think the focus was simply to find out if I was the kind of person they wanted to work with. Again, not really any white-boarding, but some asked the standard behavioral questions, others asked a bit about the business model and some hypothetical business questions. The loop was about 3.5 hours, but everyone was on time and there wasn't any downtime, so it felt pretty quick. All in all the process is well managed, the recruiters are quick and communicative, and the interviewers were friendly, professional, and really excited about RealSelf.

      Interview

I applied online and received a take home assignment to submit in 2 days. Questions were regarding sql, data mining and database design. I got a senior recruiter call after a week explaining about their benefits and what does the company do. She asked simple questions about past experiences and relevant experience. After this had a video call with the hiring manager. He asked many behavioural questions and then was given a question to code in python on screen. Few sql questions were asked as well. Hiring manager, sr recruiter and coordinator were very nice. Specially the coordinator was proactive and responded very well. I really liked their interview process but panicked during the video call. So prepare well if you are someone who gets nervous/lacks confidence during interview.

      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at RealSelf (Seattle, WA) in Jan 2020

      Interview

I applied online and they sent me a take home assessment which consisted of 3 questions (1 python - scraping data from twitter and doing data manipulations, 1 sql, 1 data modeling question - how will you join tables in Looker. Once I sent my submission, within 2 weeks I got an invite for recruiter screening. The recruiter spoke for 15 minutes and at the end of the call I was told I would be having an one interview with a senior member at the company. The interview with the senior technical member inclined more towards behavioral type. He genuinely wanted to know more about me and lastly he gave one simple python question. Next was a tech screen with the hiring manager. It consists of 3 sql questions and 1 python question. All were easy. Then I was called onsite to their seattle office for an onsite loop which consisted of 5 rounds. 1) Director of Analytics 2) Director of Data Science 3) BI Lead 4) Data Science Lead 5) Business Analyst Onsite loop were very exhausting as all the rounds were back to back without any intermittent breaks. But if you request, they will happily oblige. All the 5 people were very good. One thing I felt throughout the interview process is that at no point does it get intimidating like other companies. They basically want to know your thinking ability rather than your technical abilities. Onsite interviews was focused on case based business questions. So you will not know if your answer is what they are expecting. I thought I performed well but the next day I got a rejection email. The recruiting coordinator, Leslie Mills was such a wonderful person. Everytime you get an email from her, you will feel so much positiveness. Like other companies, they dont give feedback for rejection. I still cannot get the fact that I was rejected.

      Easy interview

      Application

The process took 3 days. I interviewed at RealSelf in Aug 2018

      Interview

Very bad process. A take home test to be completed in 12 hrs. Completed and sent but no feedback at all but an automated email saying they need more experience for this role. Have given the test twice in 2 years but just got an automated email saying the same message. Very very bad process of them interviewing people. Maybe they don’t know what they are looking for or they highly negligent in evaluating people on their tests. I m highly sure I gave the test and completed and gave the right python scripts and sql test. Invested so much time and not getting any feedback and twice in a row is highly frustrating.
