As you experienced, this typically involves a skills test/case study - when assessing the test results, we evaluate the thought behind a solution in terms of complexity as well as technical fit for the team we’re hiring for, compared to all the other candidates in that round. For a number of reasons, as with any role, it may be decided that a candidate is not the best fit for the role.
