I had a phone interview with the lead of the electrical design group. He mostly wanted to know about my education and my experience working with AutoCAD Electrical. I explained everything I had learned in school and at my previous job that would be relevant to the job to which I was applying. Overall, it seemed he was impressed by my experience and was very enthusiastic about setting me up for an in-person interview. Unfortunately, that had to be done through HR and I had to fill out an official application before being granted an interview. On the application it asked about criminal records and I answered in the affirmative. All of a sudden my application was dropped with no explanation other than something like "we have no open positions that fit your qualifications and experience", which was obviously a lie since the job was still posted and open for applications and I met all the qualifications to a tee. Apparently this company doesn't believe in second chances (even though I never did anything to them to begin with) and has no problem throwing away talent and keeping a position unfilled in the hopes someone more agreeable will fulfill their "desperate need" for qualified candidates.
