      Senior Developer Interview

      Dec 22, 2021
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Stash in Dec 2021

      Interview

Don't waste your time, go apply at another company. They ask for an intense take home (roughly 10 hours) before chatting with any developers. During my final interview I thought I knocked things out of the park on the technical side. I was devastated to get a vague canned email the company did not want to move forward with any positions. Company will dump you and give zero feedback on how to improve, which is unacceptable since they ask for 20 hours of your time when all is said and done. Company did follow up with a specific rejection reason after I asked for clarification. But the details were vague and gave no actionable way to improve. The most disturbing part of the final interview process was the behavioral portion. Maybe the person giving it was having a bad day (not sure). But after making myself vulnerable and sharing a story from my career, I was asked to provide a better example. The person conducting the interview seemed rather keen on getting a specific answer I could not provide. Interviewer was reluctant to provide more details when I asked for clarification on what they wanted to know concerning questions. It felt more like I was on trial for being a witch than an engaging behavior interview. I've done many behavioral interviews over the past decade and never run into a situation like this. Constructive Criticism - If the company is looking for specific niche candidates then conduct a behavior interview before asking someone to complete a take home challenge - Not providing detailed feedback post an intense interview process is not appropriate and generally an industry standard. Not doing this will prevent talent from applying as negative reviews build up and prevent people from re-applying in the future - In interviews don't ask people to define random obscure programming terms. Focus on questions that prove a higher understanding of coding fundamentals and working in teams

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

      - Modify the take home with a code pair - Architect out a CRUD app - Cliche behavioral interview questions probably taken off the first google search result - Asked to define some common JavaScript terms like variables, closures, hoisting, ect. (fairly easy) - Asked to define a bunch of rarely used React specific terminology questions. Felt more like a pop quiz than an engaging conversation around expertise

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Stash in Jun 2022

      Interview

Alright, so it starts off with the recruiter reaching out and scheduling a Karat Interview. The Karat Interview goes off without a hitch, and the next round is with the hiring manager. Scheduling this interview took a little while as I had to pester the recruiter three times to get that round scheduled. I get asked for availability for the final rounds, I put it into their calendar. After waiting 6 days, I try to send an email to the recruiter again. The email to the recruiter fails to send. Turns out, that the position is no longer available, the recruiters do not care to let you know whether the position was filled in or not, and just radio silence after spending a good 7-8 hours prepping, interviewing, and speaking with members of the team. I generally do not post anything because there are enough stories of terrible interviews and experiences, but this is just completely unacceptable. A complete waste of time all in all. Stay away!

Standard data processing questions from the Karat Interviewer who could not have been nicer!

      Difficult interview

      Application

The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Stash (New York, NY) in Mar 2022

      Interview

The process was talk to HR, Karat interview round, 3 rounds of onsite interviews. The onsite was broken down by 1 hour of technical programming interview, 1 hour behavioral, and 1 hour system design. I had a good chat with the CTO and the hiring manager for the behavioral. But then I got to the technical round and got asked a leetcode hard level question. I just don't understand the point of asking that question? If they told me I would get a leetcode hard, I wouldn't have wasted my time interviewing.

Hello! Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy the experience. We’ve worked hard to build a process that covers the type of thinking we do on a day-to-day basis while solving problems as our business grows and scales. This includes getting feedback from candidates and continuously improving how we do things (like interviewing). We appreciate the message, and will take another look to see how we can do things better.
