It was a group interview with pre-work of watching a short video of SA discipline and a poem response. Met at a specific time, overview of SA, group discussion, practice, finally one on one interview.
Full warning, if you do not do exactly or think exactly in SA mindset, do not expect an offer. SA runs a very strict discipline for their students which did not line with my teaching pedagogy. In the practice group interview, we had to do a scenario of getting a child’s attention by calling their name, stating what the expectation is and then giving them a “consequence or correction”. “Name, the expectation is to blank, that’s a consequence”. If not done in this particular order it will not give you any points. They also critique you in that 3 seconds about what’s wrong with the way you say it with the reason of it supposedly is not to waste time of learning. Also, they frown upon anything negative or drawbacks about their discipline. If you really really want this job, cater to their wants and needs. When I asked in more detail if teachers can modify it, the answer was no it’s a requirement. A teacher cannot stray away from the discipline. This also applies to younger children. I understand we must hold children accountable and they are capable of learning but like I said, everyone has different pedagogies. I think SA has a great goal but it is not my style. When asked about it in the one on one portion, I already knew this job was not for me and I was not going to receive an offer. I said what I thought which the interview naturally got very defensive in their responses. If you REALLY want this job, say everything that they want to hear as in every other job. If asked how you thought of the discipline, say you thought it was great. What is the positives? Direct, short, no time wasted. Agree, agree, agree! That is my advice.
Do your research about this school. Look up turner over rates, articles, data, results, past reviews from former employees and those who interviewed, read about the CEO, etc. Consider what is your person philosophies are, your teaching style, your values, your goals, and your outlook of what the purpose of education should be before applying to this job or any job in that matter. If you agree with this and think you can do it, more power to you! Everyone is different.
Best of luck for your interview!
