      Computational Linguist Interview

      Jun 3, 2017
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Superhuman in Mar 2017

      Interview

It was a multiple-interview process and they were very responsive -- I had the first interview on a Friday with a recruiter, and the second interview the next Friday with the hiring manager, and they were kind enough to let me know as soon as the following Monday that they had chosen not to continue with the interview process and taken me out of the running.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

They asked how I would go about programming a palindrome detector.

      Interview

First call with recruiter Second call of 45 minutes with recruiting manager. There was some miscommunication of the role and turned out to be an ML engineer role. Process didn't go ahead as I didn't match the skillset.

      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 7 weeks. I interviewed at Superhuman in Jan 2023

      Interview

All in all, I had 7 interviews, about half of which tested my knowledge and skills. I was given freedom and flexibility in choosing the time and days of the interviews, and the process took about 7 weeks, from the first contact to the offer. The interviewers were always on time, very respectful, and friendly. They were competent and put me at ease. I was given instructions on what I should prepare, and the questions, while difficult, were what I expected. As a downside, the process was pretty long and exhausting, especially the interviews about my work and education, where I had to detail every job I've had. I suppose that gets even more tedious the more experience you have.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

I was asked about grammatical and syntactical roles (from a computational linguistics perspective), NLP libraries and my experience with them. I had to describe the process for an imagined task, like a grammar checker, or a specific NLP task. The questions were very CL-focused, including the structural linguistics ones. I got the feeling the interviewers expected to get more than a superficial solution, and so they insisted until I provided enough details.
