Contacted by recruiter - fast track screen with pleasant recruiter, 2 phone interviews conducted the next day with reporting manager and department director, then advanced to 3 onsite interviews following week (managing director, technical writer, and support manager). All interviews went well until the third onsite interview - interviewer asked about freelance work and posed questions about "lack of success and sustainability" of current work. Interviewer exhibited negative body language/non-verbal communication for remainder of interview which was also cut short. In my opinion, the better approach to understanding why an applicant has chosen to freelance and to return to an office position - is to ask the standard "why did you leave" and "what are you looking for as you return to a traditional role?" It was disappointing to not hear back from anyone after completing the onsite interviews and providing approval for background check, credit check, and agreeing to terms for application. I had to contact the recruiter to request an update.
