I applied online. I interviewed at Walmart (Bentonville, AR) in Mar 2021
Interview
Applied for the data scientist new grad position online. Process: hackerrank, data challenge, final round.
1. Hackerrank has multiple choice with one coding question (join two sorted arrays)
2. Data challenge is about building simple ML model for binary classification and examining classifier performance. Also some extra questions about features
3. Final round: interview with senior data scientist on stats, probability and ML algos
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
1. what is random forest?
2. given a dataset, what would be the output of the k-means algorithm?
3. what is a CNN?
4. why do you want to join walmart?
5. suppose you roll a die and earn whatever face you get. what is the expected return?
6. now suppose you have a chance to roll a second die. if you roll, you forfeit your earnings from the first round. when should you roll the second time?
It was not that bad, 3 initial rounds overall okay, it would have been nice if they added some more depth in questions and asked good questions.
and it would have been great if they call or tell something before interview.
terrible Data Scientist role interview process, took 3 months and got rejected after final interview where the interviewer didn't have my resume and asked something else which the recruiter did not mention to prepare
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Walmart (Bentonville, AR) in Mar 2026
Interview
A recruiter phone call and then a coding round. SQL medium + predictive modeling. I think the modeling task could be a take-home assignment. However, the test was closed before the promised time. It was a 89-minute test.
