I spoke with the head of design, and then had a video interview with a design manager and a designer.
Warning: this design org advertises director-level opportunities, but the positions are very much "player/coach," in that "directors" seem to be the equivalent of tech leads (senior individual contributors who lead projects), vs. true managers who lead and manage teams.
There were no behavioral questions ("how would you handle situation [X]?”), as I'd expect from an interview for a management-level position. The video interview was a portfolio review only.
I was left to wonder if the apparent attachment to "player/coach" is a holdover from Wayfair's startup days, which is an odd pattern for a 10k-person company to subscribe to.
I exited the process after I pushed to understand the true scope of the position, and confirmed that it wasn't actually a director- or manager-level opportunity.
In general, I did not get a warm and fuzzy feeling from Wayfair's interview process. The company needs to work on its communication with candidates. I imagine that many senior managers who apply will have as confusing an experience as I did.
