Before I could respond they say, “hold on, and standup to leave the room” while shutting the door behind them. My eyes are trying to remain smiling as I am wondering why you would take the time to conduct an interview without even knowing ANYTHING about the candidate!? Do they already have a candidate they want in mind and this is part of the process for ‘fairness’…? Is this a waste of both of our time? I was left alone in this dark dungeon of a panel ceiling-stained room. 1-2 minutes go by and they return. (I assume at this point they were looking for the recruiter to ask quick questions about me but could not locate them) … Sitting on the other side facing me, “Well… okay… Ummm… Well, your obviously qualified to do the job, now I just need to make sure your going to fit with the team, since you won’t be the only one on it! ”.. I’m smiling and doing the laughing yea, yea understandable words with body language”. They have a packet of paper with printed questions and they start going down the list asking roughly 15 questions or so… Pretty standard. It becomes apparent right away that I am more than qualified for this position. The mood just starts to lighten up and we get into a flow when suddenly, EVERYTHING goes quiet… the POWER/ELECTRICITY goes out for a scary movie second! Hah It pops back on and they look at me a little startled but also with the appearance as in this wasn’t the first or 7th time this has happened. They continue on as nothing happened. I chuckle inside and continue. We started to connect, and things were now copasetic. Toward the end of the interview, I was asked if I had any questions. I then asked about their description of what the company culture was like. The response was about the different means of communication, ie;” some people like to walk to the others desk, others use phone, I like email, some prefer skype, etc…” they proceeded to complain about how skype is a feeling of being too immediate of an action and how it’s abrupt for action responses and putting out fires that aren’t fires. I’m “smizing” (smiling with my eyes), wondering if they understood me, the word, what I was trying to gather as being a candidate… “company culture”. So, I nodded and thought, its best I left this alone in fear if I speak up to be misinterpreted. They asked, “If I had any other questions?” I responded, “no, I think you did a good job covering them in our prior conversation, thank you” … It got AWKWARD, they then said, “well …perhaps … maybe… one of your questions MIGHT BE... what are the next steps if I am selected! WELL, let me tell you, if you are then you will be contacted by the recruiter to schedule and will have a final interview with the Director.” I nodded and acted like they were far superior to my dumbness for not knowing to ask this, all while taking this for a ‘good sign’ that I might be moving to the next round. At some point they say, “this position will be working next (physically) to person who is looking to retire in 2+ish years. So in about that time if you do good there will be room for a promotion” … I couldn’t believe what I just heard; you’re telling me NO promotion for a minimum of two years if I work my tail off… I know that’s not always the case but to hear it at an interview- RED FLAG! Some days go by, I receive a call from the recruiter- we play phone tag, and we have a interview setup. Sometime that next week I meet with the Director. My experience this time in the waiting room is a complete difference. I am now in that waiting room, some ppl standing, sitting side by side (not distanced). Delivery drivers, shouting to one another, workers discussing an issue loud enough that I had enough details and time to furnish a resolution had I been asked to partake. I check in, now with a front desk (who happen to be the recruiter who called). I wait again slightly past my interview time… During that time there was also another individual who was clearly there for an interview dressing in a non-fitting suit to their size/statue. I wonder if they are there for the same position. In walks the previous hiring manager I recently interviewed with; I try smizing again as I am wearing a mask standing in the least busy area of the waiting room. They look at me I think perhaps they recognize me I say hi! Nice to see you, how have you been?! The response, “are you” ____ a completely different name. I said no Ma’am/Sir, we met already but I am guessing it’s that person. Pointing to the other individual sitting in their chair nervously trying to maintain distance with their loose mask falling off their face from the person not wearing a mask next to them. The two meet eyes and they are off. No regard to me or much of what I just said. Simply I think, they are ‘busy’. Sometime later the Director walks in and I am walked to a different much larger conf room with lots of whiteboards with notes on the walls and a window to inside the manufacturing area.
