SOM: 1. Stress-Strain Curve, Information we can deduce from Stress-Strain diagram, Properties like toughness, resilience and hardness, Proportional limit and elastic limit, True stress- engg. stress relationship, True strain-engg. strain relationship and derivation, Poison's ratio and its value when we are deriving all the relations above. 2. Material Science basics- different type of materials, heat treatment, Stainless steel-composition...this was not my subject but still they asked from this but after sometime the head asked them to concentrate on my strong parts. 3. Have you seen OIL/GAS tank on Trucks? I said yes and he gave me a cylindrical tank with gas in it having pressure (p), diameter, thickness, and density (rho)....What are the stresses acting on it? What are the stresses if the tank is simply-supported. Derive Hoop and longitudinal stresses. Draw stress profile. Fluid Mechanics: 1. Draw velocity profile for fully developed laminar flow in a pipe. 2. Define Reynold's number and its significance. 3. Velocity profile for flow in annular pipe. 4. How will you measure pressure difference between any two points in pipe flow? 5. Manometer working, types and derivation of the pressure formula. 6. How to increase sensitivity of Manometer? Give formula and explain. 7. How can you measure pressure difference theoretically in laminar flow and turbulent flow? 8. Moody's Diagram for calculating friction factor. Thermodynamics: 1. Difference b/w Cp and Cv. 2. Piston-cylinder given heat from bottom with sides insulated, weight of piston given and atmospheric pressure also given. Find the final equilibrium point assuming process to be quasi-static. 3. Now a spring is introduced at the top of Piston. Now the process will be? Heat Transfer: 1. Temperature profiles in case of slab, cylinder and sphere given temperature difference. 2. Explain critical radius of insulation. 3. Derive critical radius of insulation and give examples of using this insulation in 2 different ways. 4. Three plates of same size kept in 3 different position in a room of still atmosphere....First tell what is the process of heat transfer process, draw thermal boundary layer in each case. Note: One plate is vertical, second one is horizontal with bottom surface insulated, third plate again horizontal with top surface insulated. 5. Which of the above will cool first and why? Till now all my subjects have been covered by them and I was able to answer 70% of the questions by myself and rest with their help through hints. Then the Head of panel asked a question from Mechanics: 1. He drew a pulley system with weight attached to rope on one side and other side being pulled. The pulled side of rope was inclined at certain angle. He asked me what will be the tension in rope? Then he asked me what will be the Mechanical Advantage of the system? Then the Head asked other panel members if they had any question or not? Then one of the member asked another question from SOM: 1. A freely hanging weightless bar is pulled from a point located at a distance of about L/3 from bottom. He asked me to draw i) Elongation along length diagram ii) Strain Diagram iii) Stress Diagram. I committed a blunder in drawing strain diagram which they pointed out when I was finished with all 3 diagrams. And asked me to think about it at hostel. I realized the blunder while going back to the hostel and felt really bad about it.
