User Research Challenge The purpose of this challenge is to assist us in evaluating candidates for a role in our team. We only pass this challenge to candidates that we feel have a solid background and could be a good fit for each other. We very much appreciate you taking this time to help ensure this. Background: You’ve just been hired as the first User Researcher on one of Amazon’s Product teams. Congratulations! You’ll be working on the Amazon Auto Garage product. The category has been live for 6 months now (obviously some users buy something, others don’t). You’re in a new team and this is a new category within Amazon. The category did not reach the expected revenue yet and therefore leaders in the company are worried. As a consequence, the team has been tasked with increasing the monthly revenue for every user that visits the Your Garage home section. The young team turns their head over to the experienced User Researcher uncertain of where to begin... Tasks: 1. Detail and argument your next steps: How will you approach this challenge? What needs to be done? What would be your hypotheses, objectives, and goals? What needs to be understood? Why do you make these decisions? 2. Describe and argument the research process: What research action/s would you design and perform to achieve your goals? Which should be the research approach? How should the research workflow be? What other important things should have to be taken into account? What are the reasons for all these decisions? 3. Describe the (fictitious*) research results: What results, insights and next actions would you come through? What could make you discover them? What does success look like? Please, write your challenge in English. And enjoy! *The intention of evaluating insights are not the insights themselves, as we understand we’re asking for a fake research process. The objective is then to understand what kind of results you deliver.
Tell us what experience you have with primary research.
