Counseling Assistant - Hornell IP
Full-Time (40 hours per week)
Schedule: M-F 7:30am to 4:00pm
Location:7309 Seneca Rd. North Hornell , NY 14843
The Addiction Support Counselor provides referral services, case management, care coordination, documentation, intake support, and basic crisis intervention under intensive clinical supervision. This role supports client recovery and relapse prevention within a multidisciplinary treatment team environment.
Essential Job Functions
- Co-facilitate group counseling sessions with a CASAC-level counselor to help clients identify substance use issues, contributing factors, and develop healthy coping strategies
- Assist with monitoring and documenting required observed client screenings
- Conduct follow-up services for outpatient and aftercare clients, including referrals to support groups, halfway houses, vocational training, and other community resources
- Accurately complete clinical documentation using the agency’s electronic medical record system in compliance with NYS OASAS standards, Public Health Law, 42 CFR, and confidentiality requirements
Secondary Job Functions
- Collaborate with internal staff and external care providers to support comprehensive client care
- Actively participate as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team
- Attend professional supervision, trainings, and weekly case management meetings
- Remain current on agency policies, procedures, and applicable state and federal regulations
- Engage in ongoing professional development, including working toward NYS CASAC credential
- Conduct random room searches as assigned
- Search client belongings upon admission in accordance with agency policy
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Basic understanding of substance use disorders and their impact on individuals and families
- Introductory knowledge of substance abuse counseling principles, practices, and treatment techniques
- Familiarity with individual and group dynamics, including basic interviewing skills
- Knowledge of community resources available to individuals with substance use disorders
- Ability to recognize signs of substance use and gather relevant client information
- Ability to apply basic crisis response and de-escalation skills
- Ability to accurately document services and maintain records using electronic systems, including basic spreadsheet proficiency
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, staff, and the public

Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Ability to complete NYS OASAS-required trainings, including:
- Medications for Addiction Treatment (MAT) – 3 hours
- Introduction to Addiction
- CASAC Canon of Ethics – 6 hours
- Confidentiality related to 42 CFR – 3 hours
- Valid driver’s license required
The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
