Caltrans designs, constructs, maintains, and operates the Golden State's highway system's 50,000 miles of roadways. It oversees a variety of programs in areas including highway and mass transportation, aeronautics, transportation planning, and administration. Caltrans also provides assistance for about 400 public-use airports, offers inter-city rail services (alone and with Amtrak), and promotes the use of alternative modes of transportation. The agency, which has been active for more than 100 years, oversees an annual budget of more than $13 billion.
