Pros

Salary was fair and competitive.

Cons

Retirement benefits non-existent. The company does not match anything into your 401k. They do an employee stock ownership program. It is impossible to know how this is calculated or will be accumulated. It really only starts accumulating after many many years with the company. A matching 401k would be much more beneficial. There is only one health plan and is very costly. I believe the biggest issue with the company is it's lack of work-life balance. With the exception of night turn, everyone in the company works from 8-5. There is no option of flex time. Also the whole company has to take lunch at noon. Everyone! Admin staff, engineers, management. I have never seen anything like it where you aren't allowed to take your lunch at 1 if you are busy. The whole company stops what they are doing and runs out of the parking lot. I know of a lot of employees who are chastised for having to pick up kids from daycare in the middle of the day or need to leave before 5. They are just not flexible in any way. They have 350 employees and do not provide a wellness room or nursing room for working mothers. They seem to have very little trust in their employees that they can get their work done and have a family life outside of the company. Many employees have felt the need to look for other employment where they are not put down for having a family.

Frustrating work environment for young people

Pros

The atmosphere is pretty laid back, and the people are great. There are a lot of talented people in every department, and almost everyone is easy to work with. The retirement package is pretty good.

Cons

Aerotech is a decent company, but the opportunities for career advancement aren't great. In my experience, they do a poor job of recognizing and rewarding employees. This seems to be the case in most departments, and is reflected in the high turnover rate. The corporate policies are stringent and designed to reward employees that have been there for many years. Vacation is pretty terrible for the first 5 years. Wage increases and career advancement opportunities are based mostly on years of service. Performance is almost meaningless (unless you mess up significantly). Hard work is welcomed and encouraged, but not rewarded very well. The company is very conventional and maintains a strict hierarchy. The top-down management style is very discouraging and leaves little room for creativity or innovation.

Thank you for your review. I'm not sure when you left Aerotech but we've implemented several new programs to recognize and reward employees. Our turnover is actually below industry standards and has been consistently lower than other manufacturing organizations. We hope that you landed at a company that is a better fit for your goals.

This is a morally bankrupt company

Pros

To be honest, there aren't a lot of pros to working here. - The benefits are pretty good. You do get comprehensive insurance and vacation days. There's also a profit sharing program, however the executives take the vast majority of it, leaving the workers with the crumbs. - Depending on your department, the culture can be good. More often than not though, the culture isn't great.

Cons

There's a lot of cons to this company, most of which lie on management. - Absolutely the number one problem is the compensation. With bonuses and profit sharing, the CEO and executives make $1 million+ a year. And the people at the bottom, the people who produce the labor that keeps the company moving? They only get around $20,000 a year. This forces them to work EXTREME amounts of overtime. There are people who work 60 or more hours a week, something they need to do to pay their rent. How can someone live with themselves when their employees are one emergency away from homelessness?! - Another huge problem is the overall company culture. Lately, relations between departments has been very tense. People are blaming everyone for mistakes, it gets blown far too out of proportion, and spirals out of control. Everyone is mad at everyone. And what do the people at the top do, do they try to ease these tensions? No. They ignore, and in some cases even support this hostility, for no reason besides being cutthroat. This is not how you treat your employees, or run a business. - The company is inefficient. And this is again, a problem with the management. An example is the new SMT line. It's a machine that mounts parts to circuit boards, and it only runs at about 25-30% efficiency, compared to other companies that are in the 75-90% range. The unwillingness from the people at the top to invest money or effort into the company is obvious. They also seem to not care that the program the vast majority of the company uses to complete their work is buggy and hardly works. A significant amount of time is committed to the workers fixing this problem that shouldn't be there in the first place. They just seem to not care about vital issues.

Thank you for your review. If you’d like to discuss any of your concerns, I’d be happy to meet with you, just let me know. In the meantime, here are some facts about Aerotech that we're proud of: We’ve never had a layoff in our 50-year history. In addition to our industry-leading profit sharing program, we provide excellent health care and benefits. And we have two retirement programs for our employees - a 401k plan and a second program which is 100% contributed to by Aerotech. Also, we annually invest significant dollars in R&D, capital equipment and employee development to ensure our long-term competitiveness. - Mike
