Pros

Benefits are decent but middle of the road compared to competitors. Lots of employees are proud to have been at Amgen 10-15-20 years.

Cons

They check the boxes on DE&I with training and lip service. I looked around at my department meeting. What did I see: Zero black employees. All people leaders are men. Having so many long timers makes teams clique-ish. Ideas and creativity are stifled by the attitude that this is how Amgen does it. There’s a haughtiness and condescension from some Amgen veterans when dealing with new employees. A common description from new employees I meet is there lacks an inclusiveness with new employees. Non-veterans bond over feeling like the “have nots” and how tough it is to fit in. There are so many systems that are overly complicated and often homegrown. The employees from the latest acquisition have asked for help and some are to the point of tears. I am not one of the long timers so I try to offer kudos to new people doing their best.

Not a good place to work.

Pros

Good benefits package. Good profit sharing plan.

Cons

When asked of HR in an open forum, "Does the company value work/life balance?", the HR person had to pause (not a good sign) and finally said, "Yes, but sometimes you have to fight for it." In my experience, that's overly optimistic. They treat everyone like wide-eyed military recruits that they can just keep heaping demands upon. Management is at best inept. Who plans to replace the entire AR/AP system 30 days before the close of the fiscal year, when 90% of the workforce has less than 90 days on the job? That's just dumb. (It was a disaster) Lots of good people left because of the reorg/move to Tampa, and the folks remaining in California were resentful (perhaps with good reason). They have showed little respect for the new folks in Tampa that they had to train. The CEO touts the "open concept" workspace layout as saving up to 25% on overall real estate costs, which I'm sure it does. It's ironic that a company in the health care space creates an office environment that is sterile - no plants, no pictures, no privacy.

Pros

Good benefits, but these have diminished now as earnings decrease

Cons

Staff are not empowered or encouraged, limited development opportunities, moral and treatment of staff that have been employed for over 10 years is poor. As a manager I was told what ratings to give my staff and had no say in the matter. I was told to give some of my staff poor reviews to save the company money rather than accurately accounting for their success. Large exodus of talent and experienced staff will likely cause critical compliance issues to arise soon.
