Not Worth It

Pros

They've got some cool products that can make any tech enthusiast excited to be a part of the team. It’s like joining a fast-paced marathon that's both thrilling and challenging. And if you're fresh out of school, this place might seem like a gold mine of learning opportunities where you can grow your skills.

Cons

There’s a shadow over the workplace culture here, and it's pretty toxic. It feels like the senior managers don't really see us as people, but more like work machines. They talk a big game about caring for our career growth, but at the end of the day, it feels like they couldn't care less. And I fell for the recruiter’s pitch, hook, line, and sinker. Benefits and raises are like myths here; they're talked about but never really seen. And if you ever decide to leave, brace yourself for some wild stories they'll make up about why you're going. I've even heard them straight-up lying about why someone left, which is just low. The products we work on are constantly on fire because of the rush to push them out, which isn’t doing anyone any favors. If you try to speak up about any of this. Suddenly, you're the troublemaker who can't be managed. Just like other reviews you might have seen on Glassdoor, take them seriously and think hard before you decide to join. I was in your shoes, won over by their sales pitch about how great this company is. But once you're in, the reality hits you. You're stuck working 50 to 60 hours a week, which not only makes it super hard to think about leaving but also leaves you with no time or energy to nail interviews at other companies. It feels like you're trapped.

Pros

- Applied has managed to attract some of the most talented people in the industry with its business and snowballing with its strong team. - ICs are great to work with, hardworking, reliable, dependable, things get done.

Cons

Applied has the most toxic culture of any company I've ever worked at. I've seen people join and have breakdowns within weeks or months and leave before they vest. Management and leadership routinely dismisses those people as not a good culture fit. We have a really low amount of PTO - 15 days. There used to be an annual holiday week where the company gets the week off, but it was removed last year as it was deemed to expensive for the company's size - as if forcing everyone to work at least 50 hour work weeks and weekends doesn't already make the labour cheap enough. Employees are constantly gaslighted into believing that this is their best option here, leadership and management regularly uses negative reinforcement and intimidation tactics to get things done because "speed above all else" is all that matters. The culture is beyond saving. Only join if you can be a machine that does not care about work life balance or kindness. This is not for you. Anyone that cares about work life balance is a red flag for the company and is guilt tripped and shamed. Management across different teams frequently makes promises to reports (e.g. possibility of remote work, projects, pay) to manipulate reports and some fall through, some work out. It's a pity that this company has managed to attract such a strong team but can't manage to keep people. The amount spent on referral bonuses and recruiting could have been better spent on employee bonuses and retention. We've reached a point where the word is now out in the industry about our culture, it's toxic management and leadership, with its implications. If you are someone with years of experience, this company is not worth it. While the upside and pay might be enticing, it's not worth the impact on your mental, emotional, physical, and social health. This job gave many ICs depression; leaving made many people happier. Please, save yourself. The only time you might consider joining is if you're absolutely financially okay, the company can't use leverage against you (visas, career, or financially), and you can leave at any time. This is the only way you can easily define a style in the company that works for you. But then, why would you join? It's a saddening waste of talent and a culture that the founding team has not only destroyed but created a really toxic culture in the valley.

Pros

Applied goes off a lot by its elitism, having managed to get employees with good credentials and backgrounds. This elitism helps in customer sales and demos and the business is doing ok.

Cons

Applied runs more as a sales company than a product or engineering company and it shows in the constant rushing of engineering before other employees have to cover up the tech debt. Stock growth and business is good, but not anything better compared to other high growth startups or even big tech companies after dilution. There are quite a few managers who lack emotional intelligence and empathy and just shouldn't be managers, but remain because they're just been at the company for far too long and got themselves into a position where they cannot be easily replaced. If you are an immigrant on a visa or have to go through the green card process, avoid this company. They use the process as a leverage against you. PERM is only initiated one year after you join (unless you clearly negotiate this) and is up to the whims of your manager to decide whether to initiate this. You have to pay for your own premium processing as well. It is a constant air of uncertainty and fear that the company can leverage against you at any time, in a company with little psychological safety. Management and leadership routinely dismisses feedback and concerns from employees, and turnover as not a good culture fit and simply does not have the empathy to understand. After the Series E, it's simply not worth it to join with how expensive the stock is to exercise. If you can already pass the interview process here, you can get far better options elsewhere
