Pros

Their service implements an impressive blend for fraud analysis and predictive scoring. In this age of virtual machines and interpreted languages there can be something very satisfying about writing C++ code for a high-performance distributed system which processes millions of transactions per day. Their development environment is mainly Solaris and Windows. It's straight-forward and rather well done for a small company. Most of the employees were very nice but did not seem to survive more than a few months. They have one big and well known client in the credit card space

Cons

The company is very shady. Management speak to each other in French and never discloses anything about the company. The pay is very low, the medical benefits are awful and there's no 401K. I feel that I was misled about my compensation level. I heard the same from another (former) employee. Be especially wary of a "training wage". Three months in, I started to look for another job. They were looking for cheap employees and so I saw them bringing in a lot of recent graduates. They had extremely high turnover in the technical staff for a company set-up in 2000. Of the technical staff in San Francisco, all but the CTO and one other person had been there for less than a year. In the few months I was there, I witnessed 5 other technical staff being fired or resigning of an average technical staff of 9. As a consequence, the only person who really knows their code/systems is the CTO. Due to either the security requirements of their industry, or general paranoia, developers have access to only the small part of the code base they were responsible for working on. They made very extensive use of in-house libraries but you only get the headers and docs. The documentation is very sparse, and the in-house doc site was down more often than not. If the documentation is inadequate, you have to ask the CTO for help. Since he's the only person who knows everything, he's usually too busy. While it's certainly possible to code to a "black box" API, doing that successfully requires good documentation and formal specifications. Developers were not given specifications; the CTO would describe what he wanted in terms which assume you are familiar with their entire system It is a fairly serious place to work and there's not a lot of laughter or merriment

Pros

Any positive commentary is overcast by the poor treatment of the employees and complete disregard for professionalism and legal, office protocols

Cons

This company might have a good product but it is consistently overshadowed by the pompous, hypocritical, demeaning, berating, abhorant and unethical behavior of the CEO. The way the employees of Brighterion are treated is nothing but deplorable. Racist, sexist and sexually inappropriate comments and references are heard regularly. There is not an HR department to ensure protection when it comes to anything regarding treatment, pay or vacation, not to mention the questionable legality of certain actions. His egoistical nature is destructive to not only the company, but the morale as people are often times screamed at or ridiculed about, when their back is turned, to their colleagues creating discord and distrust among teams. The professionalism is an all-time low as lying to clients and treating employees without respect is an everyday occurrence. Aside from that, any sort of growth there is stagnant since the structure is forever changing and upper management skills are lacking. The time, effort, financial investment and training it takes to create quality work in each department is not a priority yet you will be berated, name called and punished if things go awry even though there are zero resources at hand. The turnover speaks for itself as does the lack of growth the company has had considering how long it has been around. This company is not a good investment no matter what angle you are looking at it from, whether it is to use their product, be an employee, or potentially financially invest in them, due to the liability of the CEO's behavior alone. Turn around and do not look back.

Pros

none none none none none

Cons

CEO thinks anyone without a PhD is beneath him and treats his employees like slaves. The office is quiet without any eating allowed at desks and any sort of socializing is frowned upon. Most of the employees are foreign and are treated like children. The pay is far below market rate and I have no idea how he gets away with paying so little. In the interviews he tries to entice prospective employees with stock and has been saying that the company is going to be bought "very soon," yet is has not happened, and obviously will not happen any time soon because he doesn't let people do their jobs.
