Pros

Good benefits, unlimited vacation, pay is good if you’re a man, miserable if you’re not. remote first culture.

Cons

It’s all just cis white male culture. No one takes you seriously unless you are, management is very politically conservative and not shy about saying so, and there’s zero inclusion in any way. There’s “diversity” but only because they have a hub in India, otherwise there’s none and probably 1 woman for every 10 men, at best. it’s impossible to get a reasonable pay raise, regardless of tenure or skill.

Pros

*Amazing work / life balance because of the ability to work remote and take time off when you need it *Great culture - everyone at Chef truly cares about the people around them. That feeling is contagious throughout the company and it feels like you work with a bunch of your family and friends, rather than cold co-workers. *Good market position with opportunity to do great things if we can get all the puzzle pieces to fit. *Because of our start-up nature, we are given the ability to try new things. They don't always work, but when they do it is celebrated heavily. When they don't - we learn some things that will help us in the future.

Cons

*Poor middle and senior leadership. These groups need training and/or experience to serve employees and the business in a more practical AND tactical manner. *Disconnect between senior leadership and executives. I don't know if this is due inexperienced leadership not working well with a bunch of executives but somewhere along the lines there is some serious communication breakdowns that can bleed through to the teams. *Executive team seems like an old boys club (wealthy white males) and lacks any diversity. *A lot of turnover recently. Which is likely a result of the above but also typical in a startup. People don't stay at startups for 15-20 years like they do at Microsoft. *Lack of diversity although I know the HR people are actively working hard to make this better. I think its more a result of executives and senior leadership saying its important but not actually focusing on it and making it a priority.

Thank you so much for your comments. We appreciate the time you took to give thoughtful, solution-oriented feedback. We are thrilled that you view your Chef teammates like family and that you feel that you have the right work / life balance - this culture is something we strive to maintain as we continue to grow and change over the years. While we have lost some Chef friends that we wish would have stayed along for the ride, we know that folks sometimes need a new challenge. There are many factors that go into this, but it is something that the EE and executive team keep a close eye on. We are continuing to lean into training and coaching that will help both our executives and senior management lead the charge in an effective way, as we know this is an area of opportunity for us. Chef fully understands the benefits of having a diverse workforce, who bring a wide variety of experiences, talents, and voices to the table. We are working to find better ways to attract a more diverse set of applicants, and looking at how our career development and progression programs support a diverse workforce. This is something that we hold near and dear to our hearts and is something that we want to get right and are leaning into. Again thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts! -The EE Team

Pros

If you're a white dude, your career opportunities are boundless. Habitat might turn out to be a tenable product. Most folks are able to balance work and life relatively well. Maternity/Paternity leave is wonderful. PTO policy tends to be a major plus.

Cons

Time and time again, I have witnessed leadership fail to take ownership of their own mistakes. From laying off entire teams only to rehire for the role a year later without any apology to the folks that were impacted by the decision to shipping horrible products filled with technical debt and a poor understanding of market fit, the executive team at Chef only ever blames its employees, rather than taking ownership of its own mistakes. I have regularly seen my female colleagues that I know to be excellent leaders overlooked for less capable men. I have seen them asked to leave the company in spite of tremendous success. Arbitrary deadlines are the primary driver for product development. The company frequently ships incomplete products that have not been fully thought through simply to get software shipped in time for its annual conference.
