Pros

You'll work with some of the best people ever and possibly make life-long friendships.

Cons

- There's a reason the internet has memes about avoiding workplaces that call themselves a "family". Because it's not a family. It's a for-profit business that tries to emotionally manipulate employees. But unless your last name is Koenig, you are not family. And that makes you replaceable. And replaceable you will be. - If you're a woman or a minority, expect your job growth to be limited. Just look at their "Senior Team". Or look at the structure of most of their departments and see who's doing all the work and who heads the department. - There was a round of lay-offs in January that was supposed to be a one-time thing. But guess again ... they just laid off a bunch of people last week. And were these the people responsible for the company's poor sales and inaccurate forecasting? No. These were the people coming to work and trying to do their jobs to the best of their abilities, especially since resources had already been cut and whole departments were gutted during the January layoff. - So much cronyism and favoritism.

Good first step after college

Pros

The MIT program is great out of College, the starting salary is good but beware, it only lasts 12 months. The first month is essentially basic training & is easy $. Overall, the job is very easy as long as you are comfortable approaching/greeting & talking to people. At times you'll need thick skin but its a very simple job. The company has a strong reputation in the community & the CEO is a good guy, the company as a WHOLE is solid.

Cons

Retail life. You will work EVERY Friday, Saturday & Sunday. Holidays off? Wishful thinking. You get Thanksgiving & Christmas Day off. That's it! No BBQ's with family/friends, you won't have the opportunity to go to GVille/Tally for a Saturday game. Or a Dolphins game on Sunday. When your friends are at the beach or having fun on the weekends you're working until 6 or 9 on Saturdays & 5/6 on Sundays. You MIGHT get 1 or 2 individual weekend days off your 1st year but count on working 50 Sat & Sundays that year. Your salary is only guaranteed for the 1st year TOPS. In order to stay in the program you'll have to CONSISTENTLY be either the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd best MIT out of about 15. Good odds. You will have Super High sales goals that without luck, will require you to work 6 day weeks to consistently hit. You'll be required to sell warranties, if you don't, you'll be on the 6-12 month employment plan. Like all jobs, there's politics for advancement, most of which will be out of your control. It's all about your #'s! If you have high #'s you'll be treated like a God, if not, well, they bring in 2 batches of MIT's a year for a reason. In conclusion, great 1st job post college. If holidays & weekends are no big deal to you & you want to pull doubles on Saturdays & come in an extra day every other week you'll have guaranteed success! If you put in the hours you can definitely make some good coin here, but it takes social sacrifice that most early 20's college grads aren't willing to make. Don't let them overly woo you at the job fairs. Last thing to remember, they'll "guarantee" you $45k a year BASE salary with commission overage potential & assure you that you'll make considerably more than the BASE. This is the misinformation they use to woo you. Your bi-weekly MIT salary is $1500 ($750 weekly). THIS ONLY LASTS A MAXIMUM OF 1 YEAR!! 52 x 750 = $39,000. Still a good salary for no more than you do but I took this job assuming I'd make $865/weekly (45000). $460/month less than what I factored into a budget is quite a hit. The catch? IF. And that's a big IF, you in fact make it through an entire year without getting demoted, fired or quitting they will pay you the difference between your Gross Income & $45,000. I'd estimate 2/3 or 3/4 of the MIT's won't make it a full year due to either performance or quitting due to the social sacrifice & never see this $. Kinda shady. You've been warned! Although they WILL honor a $45k commitment after 1 year (statistically you won't make it a year & they know it), it's shady, misleading & unethical to call it $45k BASE. Any additional pay from performance that raises your Gross Income simply reduces the amount they reimburse you at the end. But hey, $45k sounds a LOT better than $39k at the job fair!! Let me finish by reiterating this is a GREAT company, I'm simply presenting the facts. You're welcome for the review! Hopefully it helps.

I'd like to clarify some misleading "facts" in the above post. 1) We are very clear about what a retail schedule entails from the very beginning. Every associate, MITs included, are entitled to one Sunday off per month. Plus, we also have a monthly wish list which allows associates to request time off for special events. 2) Our position is performance based and we only promote from within. If you are performing at a higher level (both sales and management skills) you will move up faster. However, all MITs that are meeting the minimum requirements will stay in the program and continue to develop. 3) This year (2013) we have a 90% retention rate for MITs (90% are still in the program as either an MIT or higher), so we are not cutting people at the rate mentioned above. Additionally, no associate has EVER been let go for not selling service warranties. 4) 44% of our current General Managers (the ones running the showrooms) have come from the MIT college recruiting program in the last 10 years. Over 60% of ALL managers (MIT, AM, SM & GM) came from college recruiting in the last 10 years. 5) We are also very clear about our compensation program. We specifically state the bi-weekly guarantee ($1500) vs. commissions - whichever is greater; and clearly explain the $45K first year guarantee. However, our 2013 First Year Earnings average for all MITs is $50K, so most MITs are exceeding this anyway. And over 9/10 MITs are making it past their first year. So these are the real facts (with data to support them). At City Furniture we care very deeply about our associates and the customers we serve. We have plans to expand over the next several years and are looking for great MITs and sales associates to help us do so. We're not going to "woo" you at the career fair with incorrect information because that doesn't support our corporate values and long tem goals. We're not looking for short term employees - we try to hire for life. We will provide an excellent place for you to work and grow while providing recongnition and advancement opportunities to those who deserve it. I hope this helps!
