The Dream Has Died

Pros

Fantastic coworkers - most of the engineers here are brilliant, dedicated, and friendly. And it's fun to take a ride in the self-driving car from time to time.

Cons

This company is not scaling well. More and more bureaucracy slowing everything down. There is a revolving door of executives as the leadership at this company is abysmal. They tried to shoehorn a gag order into a recent contract that employees are required to sign in order to receive the new compensation package. HR targeted new hires requesting reviews on Glassdoor because they knew they'd give better ratings than older employees. The internal company deadlines aren't optimistic, they're impossible - and people are burning themselves out while being underpaid since our comp is tied to those deadlines set by the CEO. The CEO stubbornly continues towards a goal nobody believes in but him, and most of the original talent that made this company great have left as a result. This is no longer the startup I joined, it's already begun its death march towards oblivion and new hires are too naive to realize it. More and more great people are leaving every day, which is sad because this place used to be amazing. We have a term for having to interact with the CEO - "being Kyled" - which is the worst possible experience to have at this company.

Pros

Cruise has good catered food, and has social events that encourage meeting everyone in the company.

Cons

Management does not stand true to Cruise's internal behaviors and values, and the leadership style is very toxic. Managers do not invest time to set employees up for success. Cruise is growing way too fast, and it seems like management does not have time to mentor the newest hires in the right direction. There is a lack of transparency with regards to performance management, and misalignment between executive leadership and middle management. The performance culture not based on merit and hard work, but rather on the number of relationships you have with middle management. There is definitely a strong sense of alienation of new hires, which is not the culture that Cruise takes great pride in.

Pros

Pay it above industry average Food is good Benefits are okay

Cons

Rewards short term hacks than long term thinking Career growth is purely on how well your relationships are with managers and how you navigate internal politics Tons of incompetent engineers, who just got in because they know someone Leadership is very immature and decisions are changed randomly
