Pros

It's a job; multiple locations; largest lab company on the island. Would recommend if need a stable job. My immediate supervisor was very accommodating with schedule while I was finishing school.

Cons

Lower-end pay; weak management starting from some certain supervisors. There's a culture of favoritism which is quite obvious. People are afraid to speak up because when certain leadership is criticized, there has been instances of retribution. They have employee satisfaction surveys but nothing ever changes. People that have been with the company longer seem to have a sense of entitlement and get away with their attitudes. They get away with being bullies and chatting away when they should be setting the example.

Pros

DLS has an amazing workplace culture that embraces the Hawaiian values of family and inclusivity that translates into being one of the best places to work in the state!

Cons

Not exactly a con, but the laboratory industry is complex and requires an extra layer of dedication and understanding. This is true of DLS and all labs.

Pros

Benefits and pay are kind of the best. 401k match is 4.5% and contributions start right away. PTO accrural is 9 hrs per pay period at 4 years. Great place to get a lot of experience fast.

Cons

They have a brutal Corrective Action policy where ALL mistakes are stacked within a 365 period. If your supervisor likes you, then you will be protected as they won't report, or stop you and walk you through a policy. This has had the predictable effect of established favorite staff members would ignore patient work because you can't be held for your mistakes if you don't do any patient work. And members of the management team would look the other way. I fought this with screen shots of incomplete work. Patient work were ignored for over half a shift. This tough guy policy has rotted Aloha. The work stacks and compounds. I have asked for help, but have been told, "I'm taking my lunch" and "it's your sole responsibility." Only the favorites get teamwork. So pretty status quo. PTO accrural is uncompetitive 4 hrs per pay period for the first year, then bumps to 7. At four years it's goes to 9. BUT they eat your PTO: first three sick days are taken from your PTO then taken from your sick days bank. They also observe a lot of local holidays and pay you out of your PTO. I recommend journaling your workdays as record keeping of any remotely toxic behavior, conversations, or emails you get.
