Pros

I worked in the HR department at Mitchell for over 2 years and left for a better opportunity. For the most part working with people outside of the HR function is fine and a pleasant experience, however if you are going to work in the HR function at Mitchell here are several things to consider below in the cons section below...

Cons

1. Leadership is stuck in the past and very traditional, you must be in your seat at all times or else you will be called out by leadership for not working and you’ll be on their bad list. Heaven forbid you don’t attend the annual HR Christmas party... 2. Leadership runs badge reports on you - Several times during my tenure leadership had one of their husbands (who doesn’t work at Mitchell) run a badge report on everyone in HR to see what the badge in and badge out hours would be, if you aren’t working 8 hours every day (regardless if you are salaried employee or working 7 or or 9 hours another day) you will get in trouble and be told that you run the risk of being fired. 3. Pointless projects - a lot of the time you will be asked to do a project and if the data doesn’t show what Leadership is looking for they will nix the project no matter the results or for how long you have been working on it. If you join the HR team today you will have 75% projects for the merger with Genex and 25% what you got hired to do. 4. Finding talent - we are unable to compete with other companies in the area in terms of total comp packages so be prepared to have to target candidates right out of college. 5. Favoritism - Leadership has favorites that receive special treatment (i.e. promotions out of the blue, less hours worked, etc.) 6. Leadership’s attitude and poor behavior - leadership is constantly in the HR suite yelling at people and using swear words to get their point across. At times, you will hear random comments and/or swear words and things being said that question why you are working for this company. I have watched leadership scream at people in the HR office (WE CAN HEAR EVERYTHING) and also I have watched Leadership scream at our receptionist at the front because one time the receptionist left for less than 5 mins to assess a situation outside before calling the appropriate people. It was in front of multiple people in our LOBBY and was sad to watch. The experiences others have had in the company is similar and there are plenty of those stories to go around. 7. Toxic environment - there is a lot of drama HR in general so be careful who you talk to because chances are things you tell one person about your personal life have already been told to 10 other people. Don’t trust anyone! 8. Mitchell’s “new” values - in order to show how much Mitchell has changed after getting negative survey’s, they pumped thousands of dollars into People In Leadership program and got new values to add to the 12 they already have. They spent so much money to put everyone through training and the best part is, none of the senior leadership at Mitchell follows them and now instead of getting bonuses for hard work you will get an appreciation card awarded to you. Nothing like a notecard to make your constant overtime for a demanding project feel appreciated. Nobody actually cares about the new values and most people talk badly about it and think it’s brainwashing (which it is). Well if you are fine with all of those things and still want to work in the HR department or at Mitchell then good luck to you!
