Pros

About 7 years ago there were too many to list here. Not much to list here now...

Cons

The idea that is pushed from the highest of executive levels down to the local locations is to make money at any cost. Even if this means employees lose their jobs, customers get a raw deal and terrible service, or vendors are not paid on time for the simple fact that the company thinks they are big enough to make their own rules. In the last 5 to 7 years the motivation for people to perform is by fear of losing their jobs. In the last 5 years there have literally been at least a hundred or more employees with 10 to 35 years at the company that were let go or have left due to executives lack of leadership and mentality of make money at all costs. Every time an employee hears an executive or upper manager say, "we promote from within", the employee cringes, thinks it's a joke, or simply laughs it off. The culture within the company is that everyone is in fear and no one is safe. This has lead to employees hoarding their information and knowledge they have to inherently try to make themselves indispensable. (Dog eat Dog mentality). The idea that is portrayed to all employees is that their benefits package is better than anywhere else they could work. This may be true in some parts of the country but in general that is simply not the case. The benefits package is average and the pay is average and below average in some positions. As other people have mentioned, employees are expected to work overtime even if you are a salary employee. If you are looking to get a job at Oldcastle and it's a salary position, this is something you will want to consider because almost everyone in a salary position will be working overtime whether they like it or not. There is no extra compensation or incentive offered for working overtime. It's just expected and you will usually get a pat on the back for doing it. Oldcastle Precast/Infrastructure assumes that a pat on the back is good enough when an employee goes above and beyond. This goes back to the make money at all costs mentality. If they give the employees more money, vacation, bonuses, etc. that eats into their bottom line. So, managers are encouraged to only use words (praises) to motivate employees. In conclusion, the executive leadership has a mentality of make money at all costs, which drives a bad culture, bad attitudes, fear, and bad business practices. The lack of employees with concrete manufacturing industry knowledge has virtually set this company back 10 to 15 years.
