Strong pay potential but challenging work-life balance - Roll Off Driver Republic Services Employee Review

Pros

The pay is competitive, especially with overtime opportunities, and there is strong potential to earn a solid income for employees willing to work hard. The job also provides steady work and consistent hours, which can be valuable for drivers looking for financial stability.

Cons

The work/life balance for roll-off drivers can be difficult, particularly when working weekends. Drivers are often scheduled in a way that keeps hours under 60 while still requiring Saturday work, rather than being given an additional recovery day during the week. With the level of physical labor involved, one day off is often not enough to properly recover. There is also a heavy emphasis on “swinging” containers. While swings can make sense when locations are far apart, many are scheduled for stops that are very close together and provide little operational benefit. Swings add significantly more physical labor for drivers and, in some cases, can actually take longer than traditional service methods. Over time, consistently working 55–60 hour weeks under these conditions can lead to fatigue and burnout.

Pros

Remote work flexibility Pay is good Work can be engaging and technically interesting at times

Cons

Management has become extremely micromanaging, and the culture now feels heavily driven by control and employee monitoring. Computer activity, productivity metrics, online presence, and other employee behaviors are closely tracked, which creates an environment where many people feel constantly watched instead of trusted to do their jobs. Leadership changes have made the environment significantly more stressful and less collaborative than it used to be. Morale has noticeably declined, and the culture now feels centered around oversight and control rather than empowering employees. If you value autonomy, trust, and a healthy engineering culture, this may not be the right environment for you.
