Poor morale - Principal Member Technical Staff Sandia National Laboratories Employee Review

Pros

Co-workers are generally motivated to do a good job. As exempt employee there is sufficient flexibility in schedule to accommodate outside obligations (family, school, etc.). Given the cost of living in ABQ and the responsibilities of the position, the pay is more than reasonable. The benefits, while reduced with the new management company, are good and competitive.

Cons

Culture promotes gender and age discrimination. Performance review system arbitrary. Inconsistencies in HR (mission versus mission support, protection of corporation versus morale). Poor morale.

Pros

Great work life balance. The pay is wonderful, but I also am a remote employee, which the labs are moving away from, or it seems like. The health insurance is also good compared to other places.

Cons

Remote employees don't get the same salary bumps as local employees

Pros

People are so kind and always willing to walk you through anything technical. Depending on your clearance you may or may not be allowed to bring your phone into the building tho!

Cons

Systems Engineering (my task) is a lot more documentation review and management then actual getting your hands dirty (prototyping, testing, etc.) engineering. Not up my alley as much.
