Pros

Learn lots on the job, they let you take courses to deepen your knowledge, and you get to apply knowledge immediately in real business contexts.

Cons

Hours can be unstable, leading to needing a second job to keep ends meet as a college student.

Pros

Academia is a more relaxed atmosphere than a for profit business. Most of the people I work with are very kind. And the summers are amazingly quiet.

Cons

The pay is very low. My position was just created and the base pay is $50k. However, the raises here only come if you leave your position and move to a different division within the university. It is commonly said that if you want a raise or a promotion you have to go somewhere else.
