Pros

Great pay and salary-- competing offers equals more money when you're negotiating salary prior to employment. Use competing offers for more money!

Cons

Many career EPA employees noted that this change in administration has been the most difficult in the agency's history. If your position is one that you're proud of-- accept a position anyway- no matter the administrator. Positions feel more meaningful if you love what you do.

Pros

The compressed work schedule means you get every other Friday off, you get plenty of sick leave and vacation time, you get federal holidays off, the agency has a great mission, the scientists at EPA are bright and passionate, and the health benefits are pretty great.

Cons

The administrator is a joke. Idiots work in the EPA press office. The management team add no value whatsoever to the agency. There is heavy bureaucracy and red tape everywhere. Change is slow. A lot of the workforce is "retired in place," meaning they checked out a long time ago and barely do any work. The workload is very heavy with recent budget cuts. No support from the adminstration or Congress. I'm in pesticides--so we have double or triple the workload of every other office. No money for travel, training, office supplies, or business cards. Hard work and talent is not rewarded or recognized in any meaningful way.

Pros

A pay check and Federal benefits. Co workers are hit or miss -- depends if they feel you are at their "level of intelligence/experience".

Cons

The EPA tends to make their own policy /rules based on the whim of upper management and it doesn't always coincide with actual Federal Policy. The politics here are disgustingly annoying! Management fosters a mentality I've not seen since the late 80's/early 90's in that there is very little true collaboration; groups are segregated and not allowed to assist or speak to other management without approval from your current manager; a chain of command that is absolutely ridiculous in this day in age and micromanages employees to the point that they either give up trying to promote the agency with new and innovative ideas or they jump ship and move on to a more modern agency (or private sector). Dishonesty during the interview process. No promotional or growth opportunities - management shuts down any attempt almost to the point of sabotaging employee careers.
