Pros

Quality of investment professionals are above the industry average Work is meaningful as monies go towards the government budget

Cons

Underperformance is tolerated for too long e.g. you can post negative investment returns for 3 - 5 years and no action will be taken. You will continue to be paid a bonus, which is subsidized by your friendly outperforming colleagues. Very high turnover in mid and back office Company is increasingly concerned with “image” rather than investment returns

Pros

Pros are on the investment side, where even junior professionals are given outsize responsibilities and ability to deploy capital unlike any other investment firm in the US. Counterparties also treat GIC employees like VIPs due to the capital they control.

Cons

Numerous: Asian management mentality (ie you should appreciate us for giving you a job, respect authority, don't make waves, do as I say and don't question), employees are on call all the time (expected to return emails and attend meetings even at 3AM EST), non-investment professionals have no career growth prospects outside of Singapore, pay is stagnant year over year unless you are promoted, job responsibilities are fluid and can change any time, extremely lean teams in all areas with unrealistic goals/tasks expected of each employee, low morale across the organization but especially in corporate roles. Diversity and Inclusion also does not exist as a consideration, they think being heavily Asian staffed excludes the need for other minority hires.
