      Good Benefits, Okay Salary, "Higher Education" Management

      Pros

      Mission supporting basic Science is very good, incredible facilities at HQ (solid walls and doors, Top technology in conference rooms, campus environment, heavily subsidized cafeteria). Salaries are okay, benefits a bit above average (but trending downwards).

      Cons

      Management follows a "Higher Education" trend so each new President brings in new top tier leadership. Most are Scientists only slightly removed from working in a lab, so have very little understanding of true "business" operations. Yet mostly believe that because they are good/great Scientists, they can easily do good/great "business leadership". Unfortunately for HHMI staff, the transitive property in business operations does not work that way.

      Pros

      The people are dedicated and hard working in spite of the dysfunctional executive leadership..

      Cons

      President is asocial and disconnected with rank and file staff, the COO is an egomaniac and the VP's are only concerned about keeping their overpaid positions. The morale at hq is at historical low levels, The field staff has been gutted with a strategic plan for the future.

      Innovative Science Under a Failing Dictatorship

      Pros

      Group Leaders are granted virtually unlimited funds and latitude to make breakthrough discoveries. Brilliant scientists and good people line the trenches.

      Cons

      The Sr. leadership team can't ride a bike without training wheels. The organization has no identity. Their feeble "strategic" direction is purchased from top dollar consulting firms. Steer clear of this failing dictatorship.
