Pros

If you are not motivated, enjoy having your morals and conscious questioned daily, and like to do little work for less pay than you deserve this is the organization for you.

Cons

Where do I begin? The owners of Jacobus Energy are two brothers who inherited the company from their father. I never met him, but I assume he knew something about business, as his company thrived at one time. Unfortunately, his sons are not business-savy, care nothing of their employees, and base most of their business decisions on the opinion of those they like going out drinking with or have personal relationships with (who are underqualified and put the company at risk). I went into the organization sipping their kool-aid and expected to make a difference and left the organization wondering how I spent the time I had there. The owners only care about making money and care nothing of their “team members”. There are three types of employees at the organization: Those that feel they are stuck there (for their own personal reasons); those that have been there forever and long threw in the towel and are biding their time until retirement; and those that realize they can do very little for their pay and are probably under qualified for their roles. All talented leaders have resigned or been terminated as they attempted to make real change in the organization. I have never truly dreaded going to work but I did dread it every day until it started to affect my life outside of work. Their systems didn’t work correctly, their billing didn’t work and coupled with incompetency they were losing money in all areas.

Toxic

Pros

Somehow this company will make it to 100 years in 2019 which is no small feat considering how dysfunctional this company has become. There are some hard workers who stay out of the office politics.

Cons

The incomptency starts out at the top. The owners are out of touch with their employees. The owners preach core values but don't practice those values themselves. Key positions are held by managers. who aren't equipped to handle their roles effectively or efficiently. Lack of professionalism is prevalent among most departments. Confidentiality is a foreign concept to senior management as well as the HR Department. Don't be surprised if there is a review written with all 4s to cancel this review. It will more than likely come from HR. Even the most positive, talented employees will eventually break down and succumb to the toxic environment.

Pros

Friendly co-workers. If you have time in your career to take a brief detour this is a company where you can learn about bolt-ons to JDE and the related integration problems they cause. Also if you are in HR or Psychology, the company offers a great case study on poor management and dysfunction. Just don't stay too long as the toxic environment can soon become your new normal.

Cons

Management is not interested in new ideas and you will find people are scared to speak up at meetings for fear of retribution . You may be warned early on about getting "on the list" if you cross the owner or his girlfriend. HR and the leadership team believe hanging a few posters up in the break room regarding culture will provide the catalyst for positive change.
