Everything else! Supporting students can be rewarding however, this has been weaponized and it often feels like you are expected to take full responsibility for their success… and occasionally their decision-making as well. Accountability tends to be a one-way street, which makes the job feel less like advising and more like professional problem absorption. We were emotional doormats! Compensation is, candidly, some of the worst for this role. Pay falls well below national averages, and annual increases are minimal at best. Over time, many employees find that their pay does not keep pace with their growing experience or responsibilities, of which there will be many (I.e., you will be expected to take on more and more responsibility and be cross-trained for several things with no extra pay whatsoever). Career advancement exists, but not for remote employees. Progression may appear tied less to experience and performance and more to factors that aren’t always transparent. Many employees find that “Senior” is a realistic ceiling, regardless of tenure or contributions. Leadership places a strong emphasis on positivity and mission, which can be uplifting in principle. In practice, it concerns are never addressed. Leaving us all feeling as though we don't matter, ever! Communication can be inconsistent, and decision-making may leave employees with more questions than clarity. The work environment can also be emotionally demanding. It is not uncommon for employees—even those with significant professional experience—to feel overwhelmed by the pressures of the role (many many agents report crying at or because of work when they never have before!). At times, the level of stress associated with the position can take a noticeable emotional toll, which speaks to the intensity of the day-to-day expectations. Work-life balance is technically present (you work your scheduled hours), but the intensity of those hours can make it difficult to fully “clock out” mentally. By the end of the day, many employees feel mentally drained, which can impact personal time more than expected. There is also a noticeable divide between remote and in-office experiences. Remote employees may feel less included in recognition, opportunities, and overall engagement. Bottom line: Run like your life depends on it!
