Pros

Before I came to work for this company, I was lucky to have had several jobs working for difficult leaders in unrewarding conditions. From day one with Life Storage (then Sovran and Uncle Bob's Self Storage), I knew I had found something different. Executives were engaged with the team, and it was clear they were committed to the success of the company and to making it a long-term, enjoyable place to work. Yes, it is self storage. When I started my career here, I had my nose in the air a little bit and didn't think it would be challenging or a business I would commit my career towards. But I was quickly proven wrong. I was challenged day after day to improve and rewarded by seeing the our business flourish. In 20 years, I can't think of a year where the company hasn't grown or there hasn't been some aspect of how we do business that needed to evolve for the better. We've quadrupled our size, navigated through changing customer behavior, learned how to better serve customers, and embraced the people and technology that get it all done. It's been a pleasure to work here, and a thrill to be a part of the success.

Cons

Managing growth has sometimes been a challenge for the company. Resources are sometimes restrained, where people, compensation or even space to work can be in short supply.

Horrible company...Incompetent DMs

Pros

Life Storage prior to 2016 was a great company to work for. The work was fun, the pay was reasonable and the bonuses were within reach. However, in May 2016 Life Storage sold out to Sovran Self Storage for 1.3 billion. Property, employees, and customers. And with the change came horror. Sovran, under the assumed identity of Uncle Bobs chose to keep the old Life Storage name simple because they had destroyed their own name. Upper management, as in Corporate have never stepped foot on a property, yet remind you how to run your property, changing policies and procedures daily. DMs are hired with zero prior knowledge of storage or even business. Managers are decided bases on who kisses who behind, rather than who actually knows their job. This whole company is a joke.

Cons

The cons are a mile long. I worked for Life Storage, prior to take over and after and I gotta say HORRIBLE. *The new company runs under the assumed name of Life Storage as they ran their previous name Uncle Bobs into the ground (that should tell you something) *They hire inept DMs who have zero knowledge of the storage industry, zero knowledge of how to manage and zero knowledge of accountability * Benefits are a joke. Over $100 per pay check just for yourself, not including your family *Bonuses cease to exist *The DMs they do hire, do illegal acts to make their properties look better (seen it, called one out and was ultimately told I could quit or they would continue to cut my hours forcing me to quit) *They retaliate against you when you do call them out and become offensive when they realize you actually have more experience than them. *To be promoted you either have to brown nose or be kissing up to someone (seen it, called it out) *Their "Proprietary System" is SO old and outdated that even customers complain on the outdated ways they operate, yet when a customer concern does arise, the facility employees are the ones at fault. *Every single member from the very top to the very bottom micromanages every move you make, however, 99.9% of Corporate has never stepped foot on a property *Getting anything corrected, ie maintenance, customer concerns, IT issues is an act of congress * Managers pad their records (illegally) to make their facilities look better and to raise their "goal". Seen this happen at several facilities *The only true people who are straight with you are the Auditors and even their hands are tied by Big Corporate *Negative reviews on any website are immediately removed, ie customer, employee ( yeap they actually have someone to alter reviews to make themselves look good)

Love my job - not the Company

Pros

Co-workers and customers are great. The job itself is very enjoyable. Each day is different, renting spaces, taking payments, property maintenance, and banking are just a few of the daily tasks and responsibilities. Making a customer smile and helping them out is most rewarding.

Cons

Constant micromanaging, daily threats of disciplinary action for the most inane things, like not completing an intro call within a 30 minute time limit. Daily policy and procedural changes rolled out with insufficient training or on an incomplete basis. Being chastised daily by an Area Manager for not reaching goals, most of which are set to high to begin with. Home Office totally out of touch with store employees. Current group just concerned with the almighty dollar and don’t care about alienating their employees and customers. Work hard, meet goals and the quarterly bonus still stinks.
