Pros

-The benefits are to die for and that's funny because they will work you to death in order for you to keep them. -Co-workers are like family members.... Which can also be a con because we all have those family members that are good for nothing. -Pay is average, but very steady and the benefits are free, so you won't have to pay out of pocket for health insurance -Helping the truly needy and being fulfilled because you made someone's life even a tiny bit easier

Cons

-County Politics. -V.I.P. Complaints- these are complaints that typically have no merit and are only based on the clients being upset because they are not eligible. They contact headquarters and workers/supervisors are being forced to make them eligible regardless of the policy set forth. Then state and county auditors come to the workers and scold them for approving these cases. Everything falls back on the workers/supervisors and if we speak up against the fraud that is being committed via the administrators, we are being insubordinate. Vicious cycle. -Very high caseloads and since they are hiring new people, but putting them in not so important sections, the high caseloads are only getting higher.

Pros

You may end up in a great department or NOT (see below) You get some time off (although some of it you have to buy) You get health benefits. If you are in a good Department the people can be amazing and really a joy to work with.

Cons

Everything? Well depending upon your department. I was conned into working for a horrifying department that was grossly unprofessional. Lets just say anything with the word "Services" after it you must avoid if you want to have a career in the county. First i was told to write my own job description, then they threw me into a different position, my job was threatened after 2 weeks of being there because of a bully manager- literally because he didn't "like me," nothing to do with my work or work quality at all. Nothing happened even when I called HR about what was going on. My new office was even worse. There was severe bullying and harassment of staff members. They went against every value the county is supposedly supposed to have. My manager was always too busy to meet with me. The program I was in you were supposed to receive additional trainings and also be able to meet with a mentor. Instead I was just questioned and interrogated by my management team for leaving the office for 2 hours once a month (or even less in some cases) to talk to my mentors. Other managers felt I was being bullied but no one said anything. Eventually (after severe stress disorder) I quit! No one deserves to be treated like trash. Oh to top it off my subordinates made more money than me. It took me literally 8 months to begin to feel normal and not have panic attacks. Before this I thought people who were bullied at work were making it up. Yeah I'll never think that again.

Pros

The Pros are far outweighed by the bad. The only good thing is the pay check. I’m being forced to write more to reach the minimum.

Cons

Management is riddled with cronies who are incompetent and use the lower level workers to do ALL the work. Q: Ever wonder why you can’t get a hold of anyone for services in poor neighborhoods? Ever wonder why every County employee you meet has an attitude problem? Has anyone looked at where the money for the homeless initiatives has gone, perhaps to six figure salary jobs? Ever wonder why an employee with no background in a particular field gets placed as a director of a department? A: They play favorites with six figure salary jobs and if you have any scruples you’re blacklisted. Also when scandals come to light the bad employees just “retires” and then comes back as 120 day retiree making better money than before. All things come to an end, you will see.
