Worst experience I've ever had

Pros

There are a handful of people there who I think are trying to work hard and do the right thing. Unfortunately Alyson, the CEO, has fired several of them.

Cons

My experience working at Modern Health was easily the worst in my life. The CEO, Alyson Friedensohn Watson, talked to me many times about doing things I considered clearly unethical. Many employees were fired seeming at random by the CEO. From my long experience with her, Alyson is incompetent and volitile. She has been sued by not one, but two investors, and she's been sued by her own cofounder for claims including making fraudulent statements to customers and investors, mistreating employees, and taking inappropriate risks with patient health and safety (just google "Modern Health lawsuit"). I'd rather just ignore this company and move on from my experience, but I felt like I should write this review because I'm so surprised there there are any positive reviews on this site, and I wonder who really wrote them (the app store reviews tell a darker story). I would strongly caution anyone against working here.

Pros

On paper, Modern Health is an exciting company to work for and a lot of people say they are passionate about mental health. They are flexible with remote work now that we're in a pandemic.

Cons

While the company asks every employee to take on a lot there are few chances to officially grow or be recognized. There is no alignment internally with our external values of supporting mental health, inclusion, and more. Anything the company does is for the sake of good press which makes it performative and fake. Employees have been stating publicly that they are burned out for months now (working 60-70 hour weeks) and the company is not doing anything to encourage work life balance (by hiring more people to help support, having supportive management, or anything else). We are underpaid and overqualified. Leadership is not supportive and internal interactions are tense (not to mention there's only ONE executive who is BIPOC). People are being fired randomly and silently on a regular basis. I expected better from a company that looks so good on paper. I do not feel supported.

Pros

- smart and empathetic teammates and overall caring middle management - employees really do care about the product and mission

Cons

- - easier to think of cons than pros - poor performance review process and nearly impossible to achieve promotion. always "raising the bar" and preaches work leaner and harder, essentially creating promotions unattainable as most are then only meeting performance criteria despite success in metrics and goals - clueless leadership team and vision. goal is profitability, but no actual plan to achieve that. CEO is obsessed with what Spring and Lyra are doing vs becoming an industry leader themselves - CEO always jokes and reminisces about being in the first office, trips to Tahoe and Mexico. Reminder: most of your current employees are underpaid, unhappy and you continue to cut benefits. Stop with the boys club memories - STOP with the mentality that great work happens with leaner teams. Modern Health went through two layoffs in 2023 that somehow remained hush hush. Employees are overworked, lack tools and resources and are running as slim as possible - this is the only company, at this size, that I know holds a bi-weekly all hands yet doesn't include time for a Q&A between employees and leadership. zero transparency in decision making process and basically just uses words and words and words to avoid any substantial business update
