Pros

The people genuinely care about students.

Cons

Overwhelmingly, it’s a difficult place to navigate. While people care about what they do (genuinely!) and their heart is in the right place, the lack of structure, overlapping responsibilities, and clear communication channels intermixed with a major reorganization right smack dab in the middle of a pandemic is a recipe for chaos, in-fighting, confusion particularly for people of color.

Pros

Guaranteed salary and union representation.

Cons

I have advocated for students who were victims of discrimination and helped them go through the process to address it. In both circumstances, the students left feeling worse than before. In one case, the student told me, "I knew they wouldn't do anything. They have silenced all of my friends who complained." There is a HUGE problem with inequity and management makes it worse. I no longer recommend PCC for potential students because it is not a safe environment for marginalized students.

Pros

Overall the coworkers are great and hardworking.

Cons

Too many institutional barriers for current employees. Anyone looking to advance with the college has to leave (usually for 2 years) then come back. HR also takes advantage of people in interim positions. It's quite common to "promote" folks into interim positions (up to 2 years) and then either move them back into their old job or pay them less than someone with the same qualifications coming from outside the organization.
