Pros

Great products, decent work/life balance

Cons

The CEO has been around for ages and has a close knit group of people he listens to. Nobody else has a chance to change anything - and boy does it need changing. Most of the "inner circle" wouldn't know the digital business if it bit them. And they are flat-out mean and nasty - especially to any newcomers who try to introduce new ideas. The joke around the company is that they are just waiting for digital to go away. The other problem is that the CEO sets up his business units to be competitive with each other, which leads to lots of infighting at the upper levels - which naturally trickles down to the staff as well. So there is constant finger-pointing and blame. Nobody cares about solving problems - they just want to avoid being blamed for them.

Pros

Love of books, spreading literacy messages, getting to know fellow book lovers, discounted books

Cons

Management, management, management. The corporate management philosophies trickle down. The company line is wonderful and every level spouts off the message that this is about getting books into kids' hands and reading is the most important thing in the world but every other action and word from management is counter productive to fulfilling the mission and damaging to employees. The micromanagement and personalized harassment is nonstop and insidious. The ONLY thing that matters is making profit for Scholastic at a ridiculous and impossible pace. Managers sugarcoat the only objective of making profit by repeating the public statements then blame you personally for not meeting their absolutely random sales goals. There is no rhyme or reason for the goals. Middle managers in offices have no ability or skill to correct corporate on what can be done. The fake praise and sucking up to every level of management is nauseating and has ruined the job itself. If you are not systematically targeted to quit, you will turn into a sly, backhanded gas lighter with zero humanity left in you. Working here will truly crush your soul; especially if you love books, love people, love children and have compassion. If you work her more than two years, you will not retain any of those qualities. Do not let the company line or the memories of Clifford from your childhood fool you. Management has murdered Clifford. Don't let them get to you.

Pros

It is rewarding to interact with teachers when given the change. As well as being able to see the impact your work does.

Cons

The structure of workflow is completely disorganized and the time management of the chain of command is completely lacking. No one of the higher ups understands what goes into the end products they ask for and thus the demands are ridiculous and often unattainable. Because of the lack of organization everything is often rushed and late. Things do not get done in the proper amount of time and end up not working correctly. People along the chain of command do not understand the amount of work and TIME that goes into other people's responsibilities and deadlines are thus often not met. Energy, resources and time are spent on things that do not benefit as much as other projects could. The advice and input of the employees that are doing the work is often ignored because the head of command just wants to have it done their way instead of what would work/look or be in the best interest of the company functioning properly.
