Pros

If you are basically useless, but are a smooth talker and a shameless schmoozer, you might have what it takes to get on the fast track. You will get good management experience that you can put on your resume when you search for your next job. The company makes money in spite of themselves. If a 1% annual salary increase, along with an annual insurance premium hike to wipe out your increase sounds appealing, this company is right for you.

Cons

I was a process engineer in Manufacturing at the plant level, so I can only speak of what I saw in this area. Where do I start ? In the late 1990's Shaw started passing over solid, technically sound people and started promoting "used car salesmen/game show host" types. Most of these people were good talkers who excelled at little more than finger pointing and throwing people under the bus to cover up their incompetence. After more than a decade of this, most of the manufacturing managers are technically clueless about their own departments and unwilling to listen to the people who can actually fix things. (I had a plant manager tell me that we needed to be doing our preventative maintenance during production while the machines were running. You can't make this stuff up.) It is a very difficult place to work if you just want to come to work each day and do your job. Finally, in manufacturing, once you hit the 15 year mark, you get a target on your back. Unless you know someone high up who will protect you, there is a very good chance that you will be forced out. Don't think that being the most competent person in your department will save you. This will actually have the opposite effect as your "manager" will see you as a threat and you will be forced out to make room for some "hot new managerial talent" that they can pay less and intimidate. This practice has actually cost the company million$, but they don't seem to have learned anything from it yet. The company places no value whatsoever on job knowledge, experience, and/or expertise. They do not care anything about people (salaried or hourly) at the plant level.

Pros

Many of the people are great. The hours and travel experiences are good. Benefits and pay are o.k. Berkshire Hathaway is parent company.

Cons

Horrible backstabbing to get ahead. It is who you know not what you know. Management may set a directive and even if you advise that it is wrong they will use you as a scape goat if it goes bad. I have never been at a company with so many people who knew so little about a subject matter they considered themselves experts on. Managers and Directors will take your ideas and present to management as their own. This may be an unpopular statement, but they have a Women's Innovation Network only to appease the women so they think they are actually being listened to and promoted. Different company since Mr. Shaw left. The new regime forces early retirement on many that are very valuable employees. Use this company for training, but take your career some where else to be appreciated. Good bonuses if you are in the good ol boy click, if not you will watch them build houses and vacation homes as you struggle to get ahead.

Pros

Great place to work if you are a white male. Opportunities are unlimited.

Cons

Glass ceiling for females. One look at the organization chart tells the story.
