Pros

- The company is very flat - Nice physical setup (was provided a mechanical keyboard, ultrawide monitor) - Flexible work hours (for some) - Really good work/life fit - Good 401k match

Cons

- The company is very flat - I didn't always know who my manager was for a given role, who to go to with problems, and while he states he has an open door policy, going directly to a CEO isn't always a solution people will be inclined to choose (not to mention if everyone all of a sudden took him up on that offer, the system would fall apart instantly) - Poor internal communication structures - Very few formalized structures or policies in general - In the three years I was there, I think people above me reached out to see how I was doing and what my thoughts were on things maybe twice total - Bit of a monoculture, though in tech in the IC that doesn't make them an outlier I don't think - There always seemed to be an attitude that compared to other contractors in the same space, we were _the cool ones_ and so everyone should be grateful we were there. Problem is, those other contractors are the company's sole competition for business, but not the sole competition for employees. Other than being _in the club now_, maintaining a clearance didn't feel worth it at all - I could make significantly more with better benefits and perks working in the commercial space so why would I stay? - Management didn't seem to know how to deal with underperformers or antagonistic people

Pros

- Super nice office for those who work at HQ (free drinks/coffee, nice PCs, 34" monitors) - Benefits are pretty good (especially if you're young without a family) - Impactful and meaningful work (most of the time) - A great place to grow your breadth of experience as a junior engineer* * You need to be self motivated and a go getter to thrive and grow here. There is _a lot_ to be desired in the form of mentorship. That being said, you are given a lot of room and encouraged to try things and fail without fear of serious repercussions (an important trait in growing as SE in my opinion)

Cons

- Working off site can range from between okay to plain terrible depending on the space/prime company - The benefits are really skewed towards young people without families and leave a lot to be desired (esp. parental leave) - There is a distinct lack of support for junior software engineers who often get thrown on IRAD projects and left to their own devices - Career advancement is opaque and not well defined - Senior leadership has favorites and that circle can be hard to break into if you're not extroverted and not involved in work outside your contract or on site at HQ. - Pay is below average for mid level engineers and varies wildly amongst even people at the same labor categories/job level - No opportunities for working from home - Maintaining a security clearance can be a (stressful) pain

Visionist, Inc. Response

Feedback is always accepted and very much appreciated. We have listened to our employees and recently completed a corporate restructure. Steady growth is exciting and we embrace it, however, growth creates a need for structure. We have recognized this and worked to adapt. We now have first line managers with no more than 5 direct reports. We have selected specialists in their field of technology to serve as mentors or “go to” resources for engineers seeking assistance and information. Visionist will continue to evolve our structure as we continue to grow and expand. Thank you again for your insightful feedback, we are always willing and excited to make changes based on employee feedback as it perpetuates our collaborative work culture.

Pros

Lots of contracts, so you can jump to new projects when you're ready for something new Management is very supportive of employee growth in whatever avenue they are interested in, even if it doesn't apply to their current contract. We do a lot of internal R&D work so new ideas are always supported. Company atmosphere is very open and supportive

Cons

Unfortunately, a lot of the company is split between different contracts and are not colocated (and therefor don't get to enjoy the swanky company HQ). We do tech talks, beer nights, game nights, happy hours and company team builds regularly as a way to make up for this though.
