Pros

Good working relationships with coworkers Freedom to take time for personal stuff as needed

Cons

Hostile takeover from the top has completely ruined working here for me, when it used to be quite enjoyable. Upper management touts this as being a technology company that believes in agile principles, but has become increasingly controlling and obstructionist over the past year. It is not worth putting up with this month after month. The pay is mediocre and the expectations continue to get more strict as the meddling and interference grows. The company has doubled down on their mistakes and they refuse to see reason. The impacts of this are already being felt, but they do not acknowledge it and want to push forward regardless. It’s not unrealistic to say that nothing will change for the better until at least 2025, which is a bit pathetic considering the company hasn’t even caught up to the times yet. Just because profits are high doesn’t mean you’re doing the right things. Bottom line - this is not an agile company. This is a company that practices scrum, which inherently cannot be agile as it is a rigid process. Even then, scrum is very loosely practiced and outsiders are allowed to interfere with the team as much as they please without repercussions. Upper management even admits that they don’t recognize scrum teams as being independent, because at the end of the day it’s just waterfall. If you do accept a position here, just remember that it’s an insurance company and they make millions based on screwing people. What do you think they’ll do to you?

Pros

Individual contributors on all teams are generally great people, reliable, communicative, and effective If you don't work on the tech side it seems like a great company

Cons

There is a huge disconnect between the realities of development and dates + expectations set by senior leadership/product leads, I think a lot of communication gets tripped up in middle management. A lot of very valuable employees quit during the major software launch due to stress yet the deadlines march ever onwards. It takes a lot of energy to get dates moved when they are clearly impossible to hit Leadership generally says the right things but rarely backs it up with the right practical support, you'll see some of that in their responses to these Glassdoor reviews.

Thank you for the time you took to offer your feedback. Western National is pleased to learn that effective individual collaboration is occurring throughout the company. We are concerned to hear that the environment within our Technology Teams is not matching the overall positive engagement that is expected on every team within the organization. We’d welcome a conversation to gain additional insight as to ways we can address the disconnect happening on our leadership teams in the areas of practical support, project planning, and direct actions. If you are willing, we encourage you to contact us directly at HRmail@wnins.com.

Pros

The insurance they provide to their external customers is competitive.

Cons

They monitor your bathroom breaks, you cannot get time off easily, and heaven forbid if your children get sick.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us some feedback. We’re disheartened to hear that you did not feel supported at Western National – especially since work/life balance is a key component to our company culture. We want all our employees to feel supported, and we offer flexible work schedules and encourage using PTO. To that end, we’d like to learn more about your individual experience so that we can better understand what happened. If you are willing, please contact us at HRmail@wnins.com.
