We’ve reached the 100th day of school! Many schools have the tradition of scholars dressing up like they’re 100 years old to celebrate. Seeing our babies dressed up as grannies and grandpas never gets old (pun definitely intended)!
We have good news from Rhode Island! In their first year of testing, Achievement First Iluminar Mayoral Academy was ranked the #1 school in the entire state in both ELA and math. Our friends at Achievement First Providence Mayoral Academy posted strong results as well—fourth-graders topped the state average in math by a whopping 34% points, and in ELA, fifth-graders outscored their peers in wealthy benchmark districts! Check out this chart—AF Rhode Island stands out among all the districts in the state and serves as a powerful proof point of what’s possible.
The AF Brooklyn High Speech & Debate Team is at it again! Congratulations to AF Brooklyn High students Shadeana (who also qualified for the 2019 New York State Championship) and Raani, who took first and third places in a recent tournament at AF Brooklyn High. The team also competed at Villiger, a national tournament hosted at St Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, where Raani took second place overall in Original Oratory! Our scholars are making waves in the Speech & Debate world, and they’re doing it by talking about topics like “Why Black Lives Matter.” Their voices are powerful, and we're so glad that we have the honor of listening to them and watching them flourish.
Hold onto your tri-corner hats with this one. Achievement First Providence Mayoral Academy Middle scholars are not throwin’ away their shots! They performed an abridged version of everyone’s favorite musical—HAMIL10. But wait, there’s more! Their teacher, Mr. Hogan, surprised them with a trip to Boston to SEE HAMILTON LIVE IN PERSON. We're so inspired by moments like this and by teachers like Mr. Hogan who go above and beyond to help make our scholars’ dreams come true. hashtag#inspiration hashtag#educators hashtag#scholars hashtag#hamilton
“You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book!” - Dr. Seuss📚 Scholars are doing just that at Amistad Academy Elementary, Achievement First Providence Mayoral Academy Elementary, and AF Hartford Summit Middle!

"Even though I like math, I thought that’s what I had to do because that’s what my family does....My mom helped me realize that it’s okay to want to do something different than my family." On the AF Blog, we chat with eighth grader Rihana about family, what it's like to work on Nickelodeon, her act of solidarity with students from Parkland, and more. There were some big elections across the country yesterday, and we also had some important ones closer to home! At AF Brownsville Middle, 7th grader Hasani was elected Student Government President! Shoutout to Amani, who also ran an impressive campaign. Over in East New York, AF Apollo Elementary held elections to vote for the students who exemplified REACH values—Moriah, Samina, Jeremiah, Nolan, and Isa were declared the champs. Our scholars are becoming civically engaged and I personally can’t wait until they turn 18 and can vote!
