Can we get a round of applause for AF Brooklyn High’s debate team, and its incredible captain, Bintou? Bintou and her team were the subjects of TWO national media stories over break. First a feature on their important work, “‘I’m Going to Say It From the Heart.’ America’s Reckoning on Race Has Come to High School Speech and Debate” ran in TIME Magazine. Then, Bintou delivered a live, nationally-televised interview about her involvement in debate and with Black Lives Matter protests. You can watch Bintou’s appearance on MSNBC’s This Week with Joshua Johnson below!
AF is recognizing our students of the year! Let's start off with a congratulations for Quinton from AF Hartford High! Quinton is a lead performer in the theater arts department, a mentor through National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ), and a volunteer at a local church. Quinton has a positivity that naturally radiates from him. He is known for being a powerhouse on the stage, performing at every school event—from delivering soliloquies at our Achievement Ceremonies to acting at our Black History Month celebration. Through NCCJ, Quinton has done incredible work with engaging his peers, pushing limits on conventional beliefs, and challenging stereotypes in order to foster a more inclusive school community. Quinton is excited to study theatre arts and religious studies at Eastern Connecticut State University in the fall. For these reasons and more, we've named Quinton our Performer of the Year! Congratulations! 🎉 🎓 Follow Hartford High School on Instagram: @afhhs_royals and watch as the rest of the series unfolds on the AF Instagram: @achievement1st
