We’re beyond stoked to welcome Max Freund to the Herd! Max is from Newfields, New Hampshire, and spent his undergrad studying Environmental Studies at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. Max joins us from Carta where he worked as a Sales Development Representative. With keen expertise in skiing, water sports, and fly-fishing categories, he’s been a welcome addition to our merchandising team as an Assistant Buyer. When he’s not in the office, you'll find him hucking a backflip on skis, riding his mountain bike, or catching some surf when back on the East Coast. From Max! “My favorite part so far is the people. I work with some amazing personalities who have not only been patient teachers, but also great pals!”
Utah Open Lands called on the Herd to lend a hand in the backyard of our headquarters and we were happy to oblige! Our group of eager volunteers spent a sunny afternoon doing restoration in the Bonanza Flat Conservation Area in Park City. Utah Open Lands has made continued conservation efforts to protect the 1,500 acre Bonanza Flats area. We are grateful for our partnership with Utah Open Lands and all the work they do to protect the place that Backcountry calls home.
Plastic or cardboard? When it comes to sustainability, we are always taking a discerning look at what we do and how small changes at scale make a big difference. Our poly bags, used for customer shipments, are made from 25%-50% recycled materials. Additionally, we found that these bags have a 60% smaller carbon footprint than boxes, based on a few factors. As a company, one of our values is ‘Get to the Right Answer’. We are proud of the Herd for taking a hard look at our shipping practices and finding a way to lighten our footprint!
Do we have any skiers or snowboarders in the crowd? The greater Park City region is home to over ten world-class ski resorts, some of them right in our backyard! We are practicing what we preach in our mission to venture beyond by offering our employees discounted passes to Alta, Brighton, Snowbasin, Snowbird, and Solitude. We love working with our mountain partners to make sure the Herd gets to enjoy the 350+ inches of annual snowfall that Utah sees!
We are in the midst of National Parenting Week, and we’re celebrating the rockin’ parents we have in the Herd. These amazing folks juggle a lot at work and at home but somehow seem to do it all with poise. Pictured are some of the little faces that graced our headquarters on Bring Your Kid to Work Day in Park City!
Can you run a marathon? How about two in one day? Karel Sabbe ran two marathons a day for 47 consecutive days to reclaim the title of the fastest known time on the Pacific Crest Trail. And we were there to capture every moment. We're excited to announce our first feature-length documentary, 'Pacing the Pacific,' in partnership with On. Our creative team at Backcountry follows Karel through the ups and downs, both literally and figuratively, as he attempts to break the record on what Karel describes as the most beautiful trail in the world. A big round of applause to Sunn Kim, Caleb Hawkins, Taylor Buck, and our creative team for their hard work. And you might want to dust off your running shoes, because after watching this, you'll be inspired to hit the trails.
We were beyond stoked to welcome our Park City neighbors, Kodiak Cakes, to our retail store in Salt Lake City for a day of shopping! Mutually rooted in the outdoors, both Backcountry and Kodiak are fueling the world with all they need to Venture Beyond- one with gear and the other with epic breakfast. Same, but different! We ❤️ you Kodiak Cakes
Our Chief of People, Benjamin Gross mentioned in his recent 'Day in the Life' feature on our LinkedIn that his days in the office are fueled not by coffee but yerba mate. Well, the folks at Guayakí Yerba Mate listened and a week later, a brimming package arrived to the office answering the caffeination calls of the Herd. Thanks for keeping our train on the rails and Ben hard at work, Guayakí Yerba Mate!
It’s National Binge Watch Day and the Backcountry team has been putting out some top-tier content on all platforms. Most recently was the first episode of Gearhead Adventure on our YouTube where two Gearheads, Cat and Kendall, are sent on a journey to Montana’s backcountry! The Herd is a rad and talented bunch. We feel lucky to have the people that work for this company also represent us on our social media platforms!
Today is National American Business Women’s Day and we have a #HerdHighlight of our very own female powerhouse, Meg Keller! With an impressive background in the outdoor industry, Meg has 9 years under her belt at Backcountry and has worn many hats along the way. Meg, thank you for all you do, all you have done and all that’s to come! From Meg herself! Q: What does the day-to-day look like for you in your current role? A: One of the things I like about in my role is that it’s never the same every day – some days are spent deep diving site performance, others are spent thinking through comms plans for an upcoming season. There is never a dull moment in my world and I love that! Q: How have you grown and evolved since starting at Backcountry? A: I started at Backcountry over 9 years ago with a background in apparel product development. I have always been motivated by learning new things and bringing groups of collaborators together, and have found that asking to participate in areas outside of my expertise has really helped me expand. Q: What is your favorite part about working for Backcountry? A: I love the people here – I love surrounding myself with people who truly care about what we do and making things happen. I am always so impressed when I ask a group to rally around something - people at this company make themselves available for that and that team mentality feels unique and special about Backcountry.
