Best Buy earned a perfect 100 score to be named a 2022 “Best Place to Work for Disability Inclusion” by the Disability Equality Index (DEI). It’s the eighth year in a row we’ve made the list. The index is a comprehensive benchmarking tool that recognizes commitment toward disability equality practices and helps companies build a roadmap of actions that they can take to achieve inclusion and equality in the workplace. We are proud to have earned top numbers across the 2022 scorecard. These include: culture and leadership, enterprise-wide access, employment practices, community engagement, supplier diversity and non-US. operations. The DEI was launched in 2015 by Disability:IN, the global business disability inclusions network, and The American Association of People with Disabilities, the nation’s largest disability rights organization. The DEI is acknowledged today as the most robust disability inclusion assessment tool in business. Read the full story.
Best Buy Tidal Wave program brings new perspectives, opportunities After about 20 years with Best Buy in product merchandising, Ryo Hamasaki was feeling stuck in his career. He enjoyed his work, but he wanted to make a bigger difference in people’s lives. Victoria Dias has spent 28 years at Best Buy, most recently as a senior market director in the Southwest. She was looking to expand her network and learn more about how the company operates in other areas, especially corporate teams. Through a program called Tidal Wave, Ryo and Victoria were both able to explore their career interests and gain new skills. The program puts participants on six to twelve month rotational assignments across Best Buy to help them develop new skills, meet new colleagues and learn a different part of the business. The program also brings fresh perspectives to different business teams. Read the full story.
Seattle employee strives to be his ‘favorite self’ If there’s one thing guaranteed to get Jake Marcos out of bed in the morning, it’s working with people. Although the Seattle-based software engineer enjoys coding and his routine job tasks, collaboration is what truly drives him. “People make all the difference,” he said. Jake joined Best Buy in 2019 when he was hired as a contract worker. Last June, he transitioned to the Best Buy Ads team, where he writes and reviews code, designs systems and helps orient new team members. He’s an excellent communicator with a zest for collaboration— and does it all without speaking. At 2 years old, Jake was diagnosed with herpes meningoencephalitis, inflammation of the brain. It initially gave Jake the inability to speak and lingered on as a speech disorder, but it has had little impact on his Best Buy career. “His energy and positivity are infectious,” said Carlos Sola-Llonch, an engineering senior manager and Jake’s supervisor. “It’s a privilege to have Jake on the team.”

When Jennifer Salinas joined Best Buy as a seasonal store employee in October 2018, she never imagined she’d someday be working for the corporate office. Over the past few years, Jennifer has gone from cashier to sales advisor to a leadership role as a supervisor at a store in suburban Chicago. The college senior has enjoyed that journey but was prepared to leave the company to pursue an internship this summer. Thankfully, she didn’t have to because her manager pointed her to an internship within the company. Now, she’ll spend the summer working in product management for Best Buy’s Digital, Analytics & Technology team. “I used to activate cellphones in the store, and now I’m in the department in charge of mobile activation,” she said. “I’m meeting with the engineers, user design and the finance team to help develop new features.” Jennifer is one of almost 200 interns who recently joined Best Buy’s corporate teams for the summer. It’s our largest, most diverse class of interns ever. Read the full story.
Best Buy employees celebrate freedom, community on Juneteenth In 2020, Best Buy declared Juneteenth a company holiday to commemorate June 19, 1865 — the day the last enslaved people in the U.S. were declared free, two-and-a-half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. The holiday has long been meaningful for Black Americans, but it didn’t become a federal holiday until last year. The day is one for celebration, reflection, giving back or spending time with family. Events of all sizes will be happening around the nation. At Best Buy, our Black Employee Resource Group has been hosting conversations about the holiday and ways to celebrate. We spoke with two employees about their Juneteenth experiences and how they observe the holiday.
