High school students in Union County, Oregon had a chance to learn about jobs in the timber industry and forest sustainability. The event was hosted by Hagedorn Logging and Manulife. One memorable moment was the opportunity to travel to an active logging site and see how it all works. This opportunity was made possible by Boise Cascade associates in Elgin, Oregon who partnered with the Oregon Department of Forestry for their Northeast District’s fourth annual Jobs in the Woods Day. During lunch, students attended a presentation about wildland firefighting where they met current wildland fire fighters, heard about the experiences of wildland fighting, and learned about career opportunities. Following lunch, students toured Elgin’s Plywood Mill where they learned about the process of wood procurement and manufacturing. Kaden Titus, Elgin’s Wood Procurement Manager, and Mike Kreachbaum, Log Buyer, were involved in this year’s partnership and mill tour. This event introduced multiple career options to the students in the timber and manufacturing industry. The students learned how trees are chosen, logged, transported to a mill, and how they are manufactured into products they use. It was an inspirational experience for everyone involved.
Oregon State University College of Business students recently attended a workshop that showcased Boise Cascade’s core values. The workshop, called “Leveraging Core Values for Operational Success,” was developed by Victoria Cerda, Region Talent and Community Outreach Coordinator, in collaboration with David Elliott, Region Manager, and Herman Le Bleu, Production Manager. Cerda presented the workshop at the College of Business Fall Ambassador Meeting, which offers training and development for student ambassadors who work on campus. Wood Products Western Oregon is a sponsor of the College of Business, and sponsored the workshop, as well. Fifty-three students attended the session. “In talking with David Elliott, we agreed that conducting a workshop would be a great way to engage and support the development of students who are preparing to join the workforce,” Cerda said. They decided to focus on helping the students understand what it means to lead with core values both personally and professionally. During the 50-minute workshop, students learned the meaning of a core value, took a deep dive into Boise Cascade's core values, and heard about the Wood Products Western Oregon Region integrated business model. The students also were given a real manufacturing-based scenario to work through using one of Boise Cascade’s core values.
