As she recently celebrated 20 years with Caterpillar, Rachel Quam shared her top 5 takeaways (which turned into 6) from her journey: 1. You can go anywhere from here – that was the ad campaign at South Dakota State University while I was working on my electrical engineering degree. 20 years ago, I could not have imagined visiting all the places Cat has sent me including China, Thailand, Dubai, coal mines, underground mines, road construction sites, and quarries to name a few. 2. Just say YES! Saying yes can open the door to amazing opportunities. You will never feel 100% prepared, but take the leap. 3. Never stop learning. I still learn something new every single day. It can be anything from technical details on a machine, who the expert is on a given topic, or even learning personal details about fellow employees 4. Diversity is a beautiful thing. Different voices working together can solve challenges and bring truly revolutionary solutions to a project. 5. Your career is not meant to be a straight line. Embrace the journey. I firmly believe I’ve always landed in the right roles wit
The development of the first ever fully autonomous water truck is getting Caterpillar closer to developing the “mine site of the future”. Andy Verheyen, Senior Electronic Engineering Manager who helped develop the MineStar technology for the water truck said, “This is the first time we are applying this technology to a water truck and we will be able to use what we learn to inform future water trucks. This is the current example of how we are expanding what’s possible with autonomy but there are other parts of the business where this same outside-the-box work is being executed. From a career’s standpoint, this speaks to the range of projects someone with interests in automation could be part of.” The team behind the accomplishment reflects on the impact the solution has for the customer and what the project means for the future of Team Caterpillar.
Honest conversations can be hard, but they are often the most important. Caterpillar employees sit down for a candid conversation about the inclusion journey Team Caterpillar has been on, to reflect where we’ve been and how far we’ve come. There is still work to do, but we celebrate the strides taken by each and every member of the team to build a culture where all voices are heard.
“What’s crazy is that what I do as an intern plays a significant role for CAT Digital and our customer base. [My work as an intern] is so relevant to today’s technology-driven world. I know that everything I code eventually will be utilized by Caterpillar employees, manufacturers, and customers around the world. This is one of the biggest reasons I love the work I get to do as an intern – I know that the work I am doing is important for the company and for those who use our products.” See how the student-led work taking place at the Champaign Innovation Center is driving serious enterprise impact.
Two welders, one starting her career and the other a more experienced welder, share why they love what they do every day. While their welding experience is different, their vision of what it takes to succeed at Caterpillar is very much aligned.
