A federal law passed in 1972 referred to as "Title IX" mandated nondiscrimination on the basis of sex in school admissions, treatment in educational programs, and extracurricular activities such as club sports and varsity athletics. While women have contributed to the corrections field since the 1800s, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 opened the door for females to enter more historically male-dominated roles that were not previously available to them.
