CoreCivic’s Saguaro Correctional Center in Eloy, AZ, recently celebrated 27 residents who graduated with a high school diploma, vocational certificate, or college degree. For incarcerated individuals, education is critical to a successful reentry. Caven King, a 2022 graduate and resident at Saguaro, earned his associate's degree in business administration from Adams State University in Colorado. “If I didn’t obtain my college degree, it [would be] easier to fall back into old ways or old habits or not have the life I feel like I deserve after this,” said King. “I feel like this is what is going to set me up for success.” In 2021, 35 residents earned a college degree in a CoreCivic facility. Education serves as a foundation that justice-involved individuals can use to build a new life after release, which is why CoreCivic offers a variety of educational opportunities to those in our care. Recently, CoreCivic's Red Rock facility in AZ held a graduation ceremony to celebrate 21 residents who earned a high school equivalency (HSE) diploma. "Education is critical to the reentry process, as earning education credentials while incarcerated has been shown to decrease the chances of recidivism for justice-involved individuals," said Keith Munson, principal at Red Rock.
