Eastman’s innovative digital Core service platform has earned the company a spot on the list of 2023 CIO 100 award winners. For more than 30 years, the CIO 100 Awards from CIO magazine have recognized innovative organizations around the world that exemplify the highest level of strategic and operational excellence in information technology. “I’m so proud of how our teams are redefining what digital means in our industry,” said Aldo Noseda, Eastman vice president and chief information officer. “Externally, digital services like Core set us apart from our competitors. Internally, they are inspiring teams to think about new ways Eastman can grow in the digital space. Receiving this CIO 100 award is both humbling and rewarding.”
Skydrol, a fire-resistant, phosphate ester-based fluid, was created in 1948 and was an aviation breakthrough. It has been used in flights worldwide since then to prevent hydraulic fires and enhance passenger safety. New formulations in the following decades have helped meet the industry’s evolving needs and made the Skydrol name synonymous with aviation hydraulic fluid itself. “Skydrol was developed at a critical moment in the evolution of the industry and helped transform aviation into what it is today,” said Logan Hanner, Eastman segment market manager for aviation. “Generations of aircraft have flown using the product. The name Skydrol is now synonymous with hydraulic fluid as a result of its safety and performance record.” Eastman acquired the brand in 2012 and maintains the product’s industry-leading quality. Since its inception, Skydrol has helped aviators avoid problems due to its fire-resistant properties and durability. Improvements over the years have enabled the product to meet the evolving safety and logistical needs of aviation.
The boxes arrived in Europe in December 2018, and Staff Sgt. Travis Coomer and his Army buddies took them to their barracks to see what was inside. For more than a year, the infantry platoon Coomer led would be back and forth between countries throughout Eastern Europe, even skirting right up to the Russian border in Ukraine while conducting deterrence missions as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve. Since 2009, Eastman’s Supplies for Soldiers has sent packages of needed items to military personnel deployed during the holiday season. With December approaching, EVETS needs more donations to fill Supplies for Soldiers boxes that will make the holidays better for 100 or more military service members. Financial donations that help with shipping expenses are also welcome. Clearly marked barrels are sprinkled throughout Northeast Tennessee to receive toothbrushes, razors, and other toiletries; packaged food; and DVDs, books, and playing cards. From his experience of winters in Eastern Europe, Coomer will tell anyone that donated blankets matter too.

Eastman has signed a partnership agreement with the environmental nongovernmental organization SOS Mata Atlântica and Bracell, a soluble cellulose producer, to donate 15,000 seedlings in support of a program designed to help restore the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. This environmental initiative will support Future Forests (Florestas do Futuro in Brazilian Portuguese), a program created to catalyze forest restoration in permanent protection areas, such as riparian forests and legal reserves in the Atlantic Forest biome. The project by Eastman, SOS Mata Atlântica and Bracell focuses on forest restoration in Brazil’s Jequitibá region within an environmental protection area on the north coast of Bahia. An investment by the Eastman Foundation is supporting restoration in the selected area, which is part of Bracell’s Forest Partnership Program. The area, in the municipality of Entre Ríos, is home to two springs. The initiative will contribute to improving the ecosystem service of water regulation, adding benefits to the entire region.
Chemical Week announced the winners of its 2022 Sustainability Awards. The Best Recycling/Circularity Technology Award went to Eastman for its molecular recycling technology, which is already operating commercially. The process uses waste plastic destined for landfill or incineration to create versatile, high-quality materials, shifting global product consumption to meet collective sustainability achievements like reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing recycled content without sacrificing performance. "[This is] an innovative recycling solution, [offering] a market-driven solution with significant growth potential," says Craig Rowlands, Senior Scientist, and Toxicologist at UL Solutions. "Eastman's innovative molecular recycling processes are already being operated at a commercial scale, offering a viable solution for difficult-to-recycle PET waste," adds Just Jansz, Founder & MD, Expertise Beyond Borders.
We’ve taken the opportunity to stop and reflect on our journey thus far and have published our 2022 Sustainability Report, “A Better Circle,” to share our progress. Our report is designed to meet multiple objectives. While we don’t expect many to read the entire report, there is something of value in it for every person who is connected to Eastman in some way or who has an interest in what we do. A priority of our sustainability report is showcasing our commitments and our progress toward achieving them. We consider it essential to not only establish aggressive goals such as becoming carbon neutral, recycling hundreds of millions of pounds of plastic waste, and increasing the sustainability of our innovation portfolio but also to be transparent about our journey along the way. We have 14,000 talented people and the technologies to solve even the most complex challenges, so we have a moral obligation to set big commitments, do the work needed to achieve them and focus on creating materials that meet today’s challenges.
